Renting an apt in NYC short term is almost always illegal - and is very often a scam. there have been a couple of posters here who didn't heed the advice and lost what thy paid for apts. And there are regularly stories in the NY media about visitors who think they are renting an apt being scammed.
If you can find an owner who owns a house in Manhattan who want to rent out part of the house (very rare, since the base price for a small townhouse in a not great area is about $4 million) it may be legal (but not if they don't charge you the city taxes.
AIf you want more room - look for a suite hotel.
If you tell us how many people, when you are coming and budget people can make recos.
Blind - Radio City Apartments is budget, has a good location and often sells out months in advance. Affinia Group has several moderately priced hotels with a variety of suites and are generally pleasant. The Beacon on the upper west side has suites - if you can get in.

Maybe we're getting a little ahead of ourselves here.
Am I the only one who (seriously) thought the poster was looking for an "app" (as in "phone app")?
Unless ricardonigro comes back and explains, it looks like we're going to be repeating the usual "don't get an apartment in NYC" good advice when he might be asking about something or someplace totally different
