I am going in January for fun, for a long weekend - with 8 other people. I am looking for a hotel that has nice rooms, and hopefully is not over about $130. It does not matter whether we are in the French Quarter or not, in fact I heard your money goes further outside the F.Q., like the Garden District or Fauberg. Please let me know if anyone has stayed somewhere they really liked, that is not too expensive yet was nice. I have reservations now at the Avenue Plaza Hotel and the Prytania Park Hotel (just to make sure we have something) but I have never heard from anyone who has stayed at those places. Anyone???

Look into the Grenoble House. It's a nice place in the Quarter and is all suites. Because of this, you could share space and possibly hit your target price. When you do go, we recommend Petunia's on St. Louis St. for a great breakfast. Dick

Sara,
You can go the Fodor's Hotel Search and look around.
We were in New Orleans just before Thanksgiving and stayed at Le Richeliu in the French Quarter. (1234 Chartres St. phone # 1-800-535-9653.
Fodor's highly recommends Le Richelieu as do other hotel sites. You could probably get a suite for the price you're willing to pay. Don't know what your travel arrangements are but Le Richelieu has FREE parking -- come and go as you please.
You may want to save the Garden District for daytime exploring. I don't think you would want to walk around there at night. Even Fauberg is a little iffy at night. (and in January, the days are pretty short.)
I consider no big city absolutely safe, but you can walk around the F.Q. at any time and feel as safe as you're going to feel anywhere in New Orleans.
The places you mentioned looked nice -- I just feel a lot safer in the Quarter.
Send an email if you have any questions about N.O. I've also stayed at the Chateau Motor Hotel in the Quarter and the Frenchman in Fauberg, besides Le Richelieu so I'm no expert, but I can give you some personal observations.
In any case, it's a great place. Have Fun!
