New Orleans - good side trip in a car?

Hi there guys,

Planning on going to New Orleans this summer - we have time off in July and is basically our only time we can go anywhere. I know everyone is going to say it's stupid hot, whatever, we have wanted to go there for a while, we are young, we are doing it. And from what I can tell it is quite a bit cheaper then which is a huge bonus! What we are looking to do is break up the trip a little bit and after checking out New Orleans for a few days, driving somewhere else and flying back to Ontario from a different city. We thought it would be cool to see a bit of the States in an area we have never been to before. A quick google search brought up some cities within a days drive that we thought could be cool to check out - Houston, Mobile, Austin? We want to go somewhere that is different and probably wouldn't go again - while still having a good time (we are 26-27 years old, like to eat good food, drink, into history). What are some ideas? Basically we are thinking it should be under a six hour drive as we only have about 6 days from the time we land in New Orleans to the time we have to fly home.

Honestly I know this post is kind of all over the place but if you can relate to what we are saying any help would be appreciated - people here have been really helpful before and hoping for more help! Thanks a ton in advance!

Austin is far more than 6 hours from New Orleans. I can't really recommend Houston, especially in the summer. Mobile has some history and affinity with New Orleans, so it might not be so different. I'd probably drive to the Florida Panhandle, especially if you'd like to have a little beach time; otherwise, I'd drive to Vicksburg and Jackson, MS.

Austin is the the kind of place that I think you'd enjoy based on your stated interests and ages. As Doug says, it is more than a 6 hour drive from NOLA and it's a deadly boring drive as well (been there, done that). But, it only takes just about an hour to fly there from New Orleans and Southwest Airlines is offering one-way flights for around $150 in July.

If you are unfamiliar with Southwest Airlines, they offer good fares when you book far in advance; they allow you to check 2 bags for free; and you have to book on their website as they do not list on Orbitz, Travelocity, etc. www.southwest.com

If you like history, Natchez and Vicksburg would be good destinations and only about 3hrs away. The National Military park is a great way to spend an afternoon: http://www.nps.gov/vick/index.htm
You can also drive the Panhandle. There are wonderful beaches all along the way: http://www.tripinfo.com/maps/FL-Northwest.htm

I agree with Doug. Drive to the panhandle.

My son was stationed at Pensacola NAS in Florida. It's actually a pretty short drive from NO to Pensacola on the panhandle, and you get some great sights along the way. If you are a history buff (mostly planes as it is an air museum) at all, the Naval museum.
