Would appreciate directions from Northern NJ to New Bedford Massachusetts via
the Tappan Zee? Or any other route, excluding GWB and Cross Bronx Expressway. Thanks!! Son in USCG, just moved to Mass.

Simple, take the Garden State Parkway north to 87 East. Cross the Tappan Zee and take the Cross County. I would suggest you take the Hutchinson River Parkway North off the Cross County.
The Hutch turns into the Merritt (CT 15) in Connecticut. Take the Merritt to the Milford Parkway which will connect to 95 North.
You ought to be aware that traffic on a Friday night or Sunday night will be really bad, no matter which way you go.
Thanks!! Going home I would just reverse?
Yes. But, if traffic isn't bad on 95 you might just consider staying on 95.
I like the Merritt because it is cars only. But, even that may not be much of an option of you're intention is to travel on a weekend in the Summer.
I agree it's a smart decision to avoid the Cross Bronx. Have never been on that road when it wasn't bad.
You don't take the Cross County from the Tappan Zee. You take I 287, also known as the Cross Westchester to 15 (Hutchinson River Parkway).
I sometimes take the GWB and 87 to the Cross County, then to Hutchinson River Parkway.
There is no time I prefer i-95 to the Merritt, unless there is an accident. You get back on 95 at Milford.
I always call it the Cross County, but you're right the Cross County doesn't include the stretch between the bridge and the Hutch.
Thanks everyone!
The Cross County Pkwy is a different road altogether. It cuts across far southern Westchester near New Rochelle from Hutch exit 13 over to 87 exit 4 ending at the Saw Mill in Yonkers.
You're right, my bad. I just know how to get there, never thought about the names. I drove that route for years from NYC to Vermont and just knew where to go.
One more caution on the Merritt If it rains heavily, avoid it because under the beautiful old bridges there is very poor drainage and traffic is forced to go very slowly and sometimes one at a time through the dips.
Another possibility to avoid the whole NY metro area and the I-95 traffic that is usually tight up to New Haven ...
I-287 north to NY State Thruway and cross the Hudson at Newburgh and head east on I-84; I-691 to I-91 north to Route 9 south to I-95. (We usually get off I-691 and go east on Route 66 into Middletown and connect with Route 9). Adds a few miles but very little congestion.
