My family is planning a couple of nights in New Haven in late September, but I've been reading some really negative reviews about the city...crime, etc. Any feedback about this? Also would like some recommendations about hotels.

Hi Amanda, I am from that area although I live in southern Maine now. I would not stay in the downtown area there is a lot of crime in the big cities in Ct. You may want to stay a few miles south in Milford or a few miles north in Old Saybrook and go into New Haven during the day. It does have great museums. Don't miss eating at Pepe's Pizza. Have fun Kathy
Hi. Perhaps I can help as I work in New Haven and live in Milford CT. New Haven does have some very undesirable areas and even in the city center, I would not wander much at night. You will be safe in the city center in my opinion and like any city, just be careful. The best accomodations are likely at the Omni or the New Haven Hotel. The city offers several museums, the Shubert theater and easy access for day trip to Mystic or the Connecticut River Valley. There are many good restaurants in New Haven. If you are looking for coastal scenery or a quaint village, do stay outside New Haven. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to respond.
