New England with 3 generations

I am looking for suggestions for a stress-free (!) vacation for Grandparents, parents and boys ages 5, 7 and 10 for a week in early August. I am thinking along the lines of a beach or lake rental. I prefer limited driving but things of fun and interest to the three youngsters...

Cape Cod would have a lot to offer for three generations. My preference is Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham...Check vrb.com.

You might look at Commodore Inn/Motel in West Harwich Cape Cod-2 minutes from beach and has a pool. West Harwich has activities of interest to children. Cape Cod Children's theater, Mini golf, trampolines, bumper boats, batting cages, go carts.
Beside above-mentioned vrbo.com you might look at homeaway.com and vacationrentals.com or google real estate agencies in your areas.

Thanks, I have been looking at VRBO, but I'll have a look at the others too - and call a RE agent tomorrow! I don't know that I like the craziness of Cape Cod. We loved the feel of Cape Ann (40 years ago anyhow!) We tend to like 'laid back' rather than frenetic. A bluff to fly a kite rather a theater, a kayak or sunfish instead of go-carts, crab pots rather than batting cages, a quiet porch for reading, etc... Dull, huh?

Maybe you should think about the lakes region of NH. The White Mountains are a short drive away. There's a rental agency that handles lots of cottage rentals for Lake Winnipesaukee and Winnisquam area. Winnisquam is a quieter lake but the key is to find a cottage that suits you (we like rustic) and something for safe swimming for young kids (a lot of cottages have a dock and deep water). You can buy a NH State Atlas and Gazetteer (published by Delorme) that shows all the roads, covered bridges, and waterfalls. I think your dates are too early for Old Time Farming Days at Musterfield Farm in Sutton NH but it sounds like something all three generations would like (4-H working steer club demonstrates how to navigate an obstacle course, kids can try walking on stilts, tractor parade at 2pm, etc). There are lots of kayak rental places around. On Lake Winnipesaukee, you don't want to be near Weirs Beach (congested) but there are plenty of other towns. Screened porches are important. Bring a good jig saw puzzle with you. Show the kids how to catch a fire fly.
