New England winter getaway for non-skiers?

Hello,

My boyfriend and I are hoping to plan a 4-5 day trip to VT or another New England state, probably starting January 30 (so we'll be there for New Year's). Last year, we visited Woodstock, VT and loved it. We want to try a different town this year. The catch is, we are not skiers/snowboarders, so some of the more typical winter destinations aren't suited to us. We are active and would love to try snowshoeing or x-country skiing. We like exploring by foot, so a town like Woodstock was ideal. Does anyone have any good recommendations? We are coming from NYC and our car isn't great in the snow, so we're hoping to stick with southern VT. We're also open to any other recommendations of towns in other New England states or in upstate New York. Thanks so much in advance for your help! -V.

Stowe! It's wonderful in the winter. It may be a little further than you want to go, but it's worth it.

Would love to go to Stowe, but a little worried about the far trip in my little '95 Honda Civic...Thanks for the tip. Maybe we're splurge and rent a car!

If your car is not great in snow, don't use it!

RENT a snow worthy vehicle (with good tires) because you could very likely encounter a snow fall or just snowy roads during those dates.

The Mountain Top Inn in Killington has snowshoe trails, x-country skiing, ice skating on the pond, sledding, dog-sled rides, and horse-drawn sleighrides. The food is great. Big fireplace in the lobby.

It is somewhat isolated and you would have to drive down the hill to explore the town (and I don't know much about Killington) but it does have lots going for it on the property.

New Englanders do a pretty good job of clearing snow from the roads, but if you are leery of driving in your civic, that would be a good reason not to do it.
