New England @ Christmas

Looking for suggestions for a nice holiday weekend. In other words a New England area that has maybe a 'Christmas Town' all lit up with little shops and a nice B&B. Looking to go the 1st or 2nd weekend of December, just as a little get-a-way.

Thanks!

ps-we are coming from RI

Do a search for Kennebunkport.Maine. They have a great weekend when all the locals come out and decorate, lobster trap decorated christmas tree, hot cider, very festive. Not sure which weekend, search. Northhampton, Ma could have a similar thing? Woodstock VT, may be too far, but beautiful. GL

Yup, Gippielou, it's the first weekend in December. Just what Trup is looking for! It also carries on the second weekend, but without quite the fanfare. It was gorgeous last year with all the early snow. But you should book your inn, asap. Try to get one within walking distance of the town, if you can.

Trup, when is Newport's XMas mansion weekend?

Thanks for the info.l Gyp and Dreamer.

I believe Newports Christmas weekend is the first weekend in December. How sad, live right over the bridge takes like 10 mins. and have no idea when it is...

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I am going to look into these, but would like a couple of other ideas. Thanks!

Many people enjoy Provincetown MA, at the tip of Cape Cod at this time of year. The Pilgrim Monument in the center of town is strung with thousands of lights and serves as the town's Christmas tree.

Shops and restaurantsb along Commercial Street are decorated with Christmas lights and festive decorations.

There are numerous Inns along Commercial and Bradford Streets that you can stay at and never need to use your car. It is a very picturesque town, especially at Christmas time.

It's not far from RI either. Our favorite Inn/BB is the Land's End Inn.

I like the town of Manchester, VT, for shopping and B&Bs. It's not a bad drive from the Hartford or Manchester, NH, airports. Oh, never mind. I just realized you were driving up from RI. There's easy access to skiing nearby, some good restaurants, and one of the best bookstores in New England in the form of Northshire Books. The shopping is both regular retail and outlet shopping, but instead of being in one big strip mall, they're broken up with 3-4 shops grouped together here and there, and most of them are actually very attractive. There are tons of B&Bs throughout town. I've stayed at the Relucant Panther which was quite nice, but right up the road is the beautiful Equinox Hotel, which would be nice for a splurge.

I would think the mountains of Vermont or New Hampshire has more of what you are looking for than the seacoast. Grafton Vermont is about as 'picture postcard' Christmas as it gets, but it's tiny and isolated. Also look at Jackson NH, Sugar Hill NH, Woodstock Vt, and Stowe Vt.

I have to vote with zootsi for a small town in VT. Did Middlebury, VT last year and it was a weekend to remember. Almost froze finding that perfect X-MAS tree but it all worked out!

My vote is the Norman Rockwell Holiday Celebration in Stockbridge, Massachusetts (the Berkshires) - the weekend of December 4-5. There are lots of B&Bs in the Berkshires.

Here's the link: http://www.stockbridgechamber.org/frxmas.html

I agree with Stockbridge. Black Swan is very nice, upgrade to a romm with a canapy bed and fireplace.

I hope Truppi made it to Kennebunkport's Christmas Prelude this weekend. I was there tonight, and will return Sunday, and have to say it is magical this year. Not too cold, and a perfect "made-to-order" two inch coating of fresh snow. Lots of activitiy all over town, and everyone/place seemed "in the spirit" with thousands of tiny white lights and decorations. Tomorrow should be perfect with partly sunny skies. Happy Holidays!
