New England Advive??

Hello All,

I am thinking about taking a road trip from Maryland to the New England States with my wife. Possibly a 4-5 day road trip. Can anyone suggest a few "must dos" or "must see" or even which states to concentrate on? We prefer quiet quaint towns with personality if possible. I realize it may be hard to see eveything on a 4-5 day excursion but any suggestions are appreciated. Also planning to do this in the beginning of Oct. (too cold??) or would the beginning of Sept be better?? Thanks in advance....

Yikes. New England is small, but 4-5 days is not enough time to do it all. You need to pick a state or two, lakes or mountains or coast or all, and let us know what you like to do (hike, shop, museums, galleries?) and what your budget is. And you'll need to decide soon because that will be peak foliage time in many areas, and rooms are probably already booked.

I would suggest VT but you will probably need to go b4 leaf season.Read the VT POSTS where there are endless suggestions. A pretty straight shot up RTE 287 in NJ to 87N in NY.

There are so many options.
If you want to see foliage in early October, you're talking about New Hampshire or Vermont.
The Berkshires in Western Massachusetts is also a choice location, though early October may be just a little too early for the peak foliage. Still, it's a beautiful area.

First week of October would have great foliage in central NH and Vermont. If you chose a town near the NH/VT border you could do daily drives, looping thru either state. If you stayed in Portsmouth NH (many great restaurants) you could drive into Maine or make a day trip thru the White Mountains. It would be best to focus on something you would really like to do. Hiking? For history, that would be a great time to see Shelburne Museum in VT and stay in Middlebury (college town + quaint). But make reservations ASAP.
