New Engalnd Itinerary-Doable?

Married couple 50's - 60's- Enjoy outdoors, lobster, beautiful drives, fishing, easy hikes, good food and are not fancy. Traveling next week.
Day 1- Land Boston noon. rent car to Cape. Thinking Chatham or Orleans or Eastham. Lobster for dinner. casual place with drawn butter lobster?
Day 2 Explore the Cape - National Park..cruise 6a, check out small towns. Traffic bad this time of year?
Day 3 Ferry to MV and Nantucket or just MV?
Day 4 Drive to Newport. See mansion , cliff walk, drive Ocean Drive stay in Providence perhaps.
Day 5 Drive to Manchester Vt thru Bennington. Stay Manchester
Day 6 Drive thru Green mountains to to NH and White Mountains. Hopefully find a lake somewhere and sit a day or 2
Day 7 sit
Day 8/9 Back to Boston. Drop off car explore Boston 2 days.
Day 9 fly home
So too much. Do we need to make hotel reservations in the mountains?
Where can we get good lobster to bring home? Will bring cooler if needed.
Any Hotel or specific town suggestions in White Mountains.
Is Lake champlain worth a venture/
Thanks for your help

It's a rather aggressive tour. I would shorten it and maybe toss out VT and NH altogether, to enjoy the Cape, Newport and RI and Boston.

However there was once a poster who did an even more extreme schedule and it was one of the great trip reports. Everyone said they were doing too much, but reading that report made me realize - sometimes just a taste of this and a taste of that is equally satisfying.

Hope you get some ideas! Happy planning!

Traveling next week? Looks like your plans are set. Wood agree with above...a bit ambitious, such as both Nantucket and Vineyard and both Greene Mnts. and White Mnts. Nice to plan "sit" for a day! Surely you will find the right spot. But also down to RI? Point is you are adding up miles north, south and east.

No time in Boston nor Maine coast? Well, another time...or maybe already seen and done. As for lobster there are many places.

Autumn in definitely in the air with trees just starting to change here in NH. I89 from Concord NH to Montpelier area was a pretty drive a couple of weeks ago, just for scenery. No foliage color then.
Ferry to MV is plenty for one day. Check ferry schedule. We took a van tour and did a lot of walking. You have to park in a remote parking lot so allow time to get to ferry from where you are staying.
PYO apple orchards are pretty right now. Do that for an easy hike and get some good apples. Some orchards are doing extra things on weekends like hayrides. If you get to NH, Gould Hill near Concord NH has a pretty view and a tremendous variety of apples.
But I think you can spend all week on the Cape and exploring Rhode Island. If you stay in a place with a kitchenette, you can buy lobsters at a grocery store where they will steam them for you. Market Basket chain has lobsters for $4.99/lb this week but to take home, I would go to a place that can pack them properly to survive the trip. You don't want to get home with dead lobsters.

Legal Seafood at Logan in Terminal C will pack seafood for travel; this will work if you are departing from terminal C.

I would say it's too much planned to really take in what you are seeing. I would skip Newport for sure. I would go to MV, not Nantucket for a quick visit. You can see a lot more of the island on MV. Not worth going all the way to Lake Champlain given your schedule. In the white mountains check out the White Mountain Hotel.http://www.whitemountainhotel.com. It's a nice place to relax, an independent hotel. Has a beautiful warm outdoor pool open year round. Nothing like being out in the pool at night under the stars. Down the cape check out Ship's Knee Inn in Orleans, particularly room 4.http://www.shipskneesinn.com. It's a perfect location, can walk to the beach. This time of year down the cape is perfect and no traffic. Sounds like you've got a great trip outlined. Personally, I would skip RI altogether this time around and go to the Maine coast. It is quintessential, working harbors, amazing sights and abundant lobster.

Are you hoping to see fall foliage in Vt and NH? Because it's just starting to turn and even by next week it won't be very good. Unfortunately, at this time of year, the few weeks before the foliage is good, the trees actually look worse than earlier in the summer. They are a kind of dull, dark green with just a bit of dull yellow.

Because of that, I would stick to the coast. The cape will be lovely, Boston will be nice, RI OK. I agree with the poster above that the Maine coast would be best - plenty of cute towns, beautiful coast, lots of lobster. If you skipped RI, VT and NH you'd have time to go all the way to Acadia. And if you had three days there you could even do a day trip over to the White Mts in NH.
