Neue Galerie
We just returned a few minutes ago from a 2 day visit to NYC where went to the Neue Galerie today to see its collection of Gustav Klimpt paintings. It was our first time there and after a wait of about 20 minutes to enter, we paid our admission ($15 senior admission) collected our free audio guides and went to the 2nd floor to see the collection. Reaction: Wow! Just Wow! A fabulous collection in a beautiful setting. Of course there was the iconic portrait of Adele Blloch-Bauer I, aka Woman in Gold but also a later portrait of her which is a stark contrast in use of color and even style. And, a number of other works by Klimpt. The room next to these paintings had the working pencil drawings that served as the basis for these paintings as Klimpt experimented with different angles, dress, poses, etc. By the end one develops a deeper insight into how he worked toward his finished paintings. Fascinating.
The Neue Galerie of course has an excellent collection of other paintings by German and Austrian artists as well as applied arts such as some examples of women's fashion of the era. It is altogether a place not to be missed on your NY visit. Be sure to get there. And while there, enjoy lunch or just Viennese coffee and pastries at the Galerie's Cafe Sabarsky and imagine you are in Vienna.

We were just there in July and agree that it's a lovely gallery. Several of the rooms were closed for renovation at that time but there was still a lot to see and we felt we could take our time in the rooms that were open. When we were ready to leave there was a downpour so we sat in the cafe and had a leisurely glass of wine and some sweets to pass the time till the rain stopped. It was lovely.
By the way, on the first Friday of every month the gallery is free of charge from 6 to 8 p.m.

I understand that there usually is a line for the cafe, but not nearly as long a wait as to get into the building. Facing the building, the line to get into the gallery itself is toward the right and I am told often continues around the corner (the Neue Galerie is the corner building). The line for the cafe would be to your left if there is one. Then there would be a line inside for seating. Yesterday that was about 10 minutes for our party of four. They have a second cafe one floor below, that is not quite as elegant, but a shorter wait and I am told the menu and prices are the same as the main cafe on the ground floor. Prices are not cheap, e.g. a pastry is $9-10, other items higher. I nice pot of tea runs $6 but is enough for about 3 cups and is leaf brewed at the table.

Just an FYI, the current exhibition of Klimt (no "p") and the Women of Vienna's Golden Age runs through Jan 2017. Ordinarily there aren't so many Klimts in that small space, you just hit it at a perfect time to see some reunited and on loan from museums and private collections.

I highly recommend the Lauder-curated Masterpieces of the Neue which is upstairs from this. A fascinating look at what the creator of this gallery feels are his gems. Until January they are showing German masterpieces, after that will be Austrian.

Yes, we went to the gallery first and then only went to the cafe on our way out because it was raining. There was a short line for the cafe as we were going upstairs to the gallery.
We went late in the day so maybe that was why but we're pretty lucky travelers about this sort of thing (that sound you hear is me knocking wood). We went to the Vatican museum just before opening and were guided past a line of about a zillion people whom we were told were 'tour groups'. Because we were on our own, I guess, we got to just walk in!
