we have a 5 month old so we dont want to go to the beach and also dont want to fight the summer crowds. looking for something like the inn at perry cabin in st michaels - just not as expensive. on the water, rooms with outdoor access so we can enjoy a glass of wine while the boy sleeps, cute town perhaps, open to rentals not just hotels/resorts. just a night or weekend trip soon. i would love to sit on an adirondack chair, stare at the water, read a book, veg.
we are new to western loudoun county, VA so not sure what is within a couple hours drive. we are open to suggestions in VA, PA, WV, MD (DE?) on a river, lake, mountain stream...
Need to stare at the water (in VA, PA, WV, MD anywhere)

The Woods in WVA might work.
deep creek lake in Maryland is supposed to be beautiful. friends of ours go there often and rave about beauty and quiet.
I also would recommend Deep Creek Lake. Just google a search for Deep Creek Lake Maryland and you will find tons of info. This is one site: http://www.deepcreek.com/ If looking for a waterfront rental, also try www.vrbo.com. Nice area.
If you go there, it would be a short drive for a daytrip to two other water recreation areas in nearby PA. Youghiogheny Dam is an area for boating, swimming but not alot of waterfront property.
First choice and a place worth visiting if you go to Deep Creek is to take a drive to Ohiopyle State Park in PA to view the falls and walk around the area, enjoy an outside lunch or take a short bike ride on the scenic trails--also some other waterfalls accessible by trails. The nicest part of the bike riding trail heads out in the direction of Confluence behind the train depot. This is a link to some info about the Yough Dam and Ohiopyle falls (but the picture of the falls is not the higher falls, there are two)

A river facing room at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg.

thanks for the suggestions! we are heading to deep creek this summer and will check out kingsmill. keep em coming.
Actually, the more I think about it...Deep Creek is the ideal spot for a laid-back summer retreat....as a native Marylander, ashamed I've only been once, but looking forward to next time.
Another vote for Deep Creek. writerhenn, you're in good company--have only been there once for a long weekend....that is to date, we will return!
It's been ages but I remember Solomon's Island, MD being very nice, quiet...perhaps someone with more knowledge can advise, re-educate me.
