Will you have done things with them in Mobile already?
Mobile has the Exporium Science Center http://www.exploreum.com
"Shrek - The Musical" is supposed to be in Mobile some time this summer, but I don't know when.
Do you want to do things other than spend time at the beach?
The Marriott Grand Hotel in Point Clear, AL, has an afternoon cannon firing at 4:00, followed by afternoon tea.
One activity they might enjoy is the Gulf Breeze Zoo, between Gulf Breeze and Navarre (Florida) on US 98. http://www.gulfbreezezoo.org
Fort Walton Beach has the Gulfarium (although you could easily visit it during your time in Destin). http://www.gulfarium.com
There is a children's museum in Pensacola as well. http://www.historicpensacola.org/events.cfm
If they would enjoy "exploring" old forts, there are several in the Pensacola area:

http://www.nps.gov/guis/planyourvisit/fort-barrancas.htm
http://www.nps.gov/guis/historyculture/advanced-redoubt.htm
As well as Fort Morgan near Mobile:

You could go canoeing or tubing (although perhaps they are still a bit young?) on the Blackwater River NE of Pensacola.

These things might appeal to boys more than girls, but you could consider them:
Battleship USS Alabama in Mobile (also has a submarine and some planes)
http://www.ussalabama.com
National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola (LOTS of planes)
http://www.navalaviationmuseum.org
Blue Angels (Navy flight team) air show on Pensacola Beach is July 13
Yes, we will have done the USS Alabama,Exporium, and Dauphin Island. I was thinking of driving to Montgomery spending a couple of days then on to Destin. We knew as a famiy we all wanted to go to Pensacola but was waiting till we all met up in Destin.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
Montgomery isn't exactly what I consider a fun destination for children, but the following might engage 6-year-olds:
The Alabama Cattlemen's Association "Mooseum" http://www.bamabeef.org/
The riverboat "Harriott II" http://www.funontheriver.net/
The Man Wildlife Learning Museum http://www.mannmuseum.com/
The Montgomery Zoo http://www.montgomeryzoo.com/
Old Alabama Town http://www.oldalabamatown.com/
Gayle Planetarium http://montgomery.troy.edu/
I haven't been to any of them, though. I have been to other things in Montgomery (like the capitol, White House of the Confederacy, civil right sites) but I don't know how much appeal they would have for young children.
Keep in mind that places inland, like Montgomery, will be hotter and more humid than coastal locales (no sea breezes) in July.
The girls love beach and more beach but couldn't find anything different to add to the trip that I thought they would enjoy. We live in Dallas and have memberships to the zoo, arboretum, new Perot Museum and theater. I would have picked June to visit but this was the only time all the family could get off.
I thinks we will give Old Alabama Town and Hariott a try.
Thanks
