Need suggestions - VT or ME in Sept?
(I will also post in the Lounge)
Hello all - I will have to go to east coast for business, and my colleague and I will choose between Vermont or Maine (each goes to a different location, she is letting me pick which one I want). If I choose Vermont, I'd like to spend some extra days as a tourist, even though I know it's too early for fall colors. I like nature, trees, hiking, etc. Does anyone have advice on where to play tourist for a few days? Co-workers have suggested Stowe, Woodstock, or Weston.
On the other hand, if I choose the Maine assignment, I will be on Bar Harbor island. I'm assuming most of the tourist areas that I can visit will be ocean-related? Some people suggested Lubec or Camden as nice tourist spots.
As always, thank you all in advance for any advice.

You're comparing apples and oranges - both destinations are great, it depends on what you want. Vermont is all about small villages, farms, mountains, and woods. Quiet and bucolic. Bar Harbor a touristy little seaside town near the very picturesque Acadia National Park. Lots of rockbound coast, sandy coves, fishing villages. Both destinations offer lots of nature and hiking opportunities.

Thank you for the descriptions between the two. I will have a car, so visiting nearby towns is do-able (I would be able to venture beyond Bar Harbor). I think VT sounds a little more like my cup of tea, but I do love lobsters and it's not often I will get the opportunity to see ME. So hard to pick, but I'll have to decide soon. . .

If you choose VT, I would not stay in Woodstock which is ultra touristy. If you go a little further north, Norwich Inn is lovely and Norwich is also home to King Arthur Flour if you'd like to take a baking class. You might look at what events might be happening in VT. Check out hiking trails.
Bar Harbor is further north than we like to go. We like the mid-coast area. Camden is beautiful and the view from Mt. Battie is magnificent. It looks out over the harbor where windjammers are based. Continuing south you will be able to find lobster lots of places but the lobster shacks are usually closed weekdays after Labor Day. McLoon's near Rockland stays open and is one of the prettiest picnic tables with view of working harbor places. You might consider taking a boat trip out to Monhegan Island for some wonderful rocky cliff hikes. Take a picnic lunch. But there's an easy hike out to Owl's Head Light near Rockland.
In NH, supermarkets will steam lobster for you and right now they are $6.99/lb. There are probably supermarkets in VT that do the same.

Bar Harbor's Night Sky Festival is 21-24 Sept, so if your stay includes those nights, book soon.
Moosehead Lake and Mt Kineo are glorious in September if you don't mind the 3 hour drive. Camden would be more drive-friendly if you are flying home from Portland...and Mt Battie near Camden is well worth a hike.
