I'm taking my teenage daughter to NY for 3 nights for spring break. Would appreciate suggestions for the following kinds of restaurants. (she is not as comfortable at real dressy or elegant restaurants.) Also, we are staying at 50th & Lexington, but will go anywhere within reason
1. Italian
2. Chinese
3. Pre-theater (so glad the strike is over!)
4. Sushi
5. Deli
Thank you so much!!

Well let's see...
Italian - Becco for pasta, John's Pizza for, uh, pizza.
Chinese - Not really Chinese, but Ruby Foos is good.
Pre-theatre - Try Joe Allen on Restaurant Row.
Sushi - you're on your own.
Deli - in the Midtown area you're pretty much limited to The Stage or Carnegie Deli. Just last night I ate at The Stage and it was pretty awful, so go with Carnegie. Better yet, take a trip down to the East Village and go to the Second Avenue Deli. (Make sure you walk down St. Marks Place before or after.)
Right around the corner from your hotel is Ess-a-Bagel on 3rd ave betw. 50-51 for deli.
There are thousands of Italian restaurants. One of the best near your hotel is Fresco on 52nd betw 5th & Madison but it is moderately expensive. A good option would be to go to their "next door" location, Fresco on the go for take out or casual eat in.
Sushi Yasuda on 43rd betw 2nd & 3rd is rated the best Japanese in NY by Zagats but it's VERY expensive. BUT they have a pre theater dinner (even though they're not in the theater district) for $18.50. The best, least fancy/expensive, uptown Chinese, according to Zagat is Phoenix Garden on 40th betw 2nd & 3rd. I've not been there but it's highly rated. Chin Chin & Shun Lee Palace are both nearer your hotel & excellent but fancy & expensive.
She might like this casual little Italian restaurant, South Side Cafe (www.southsidecafe.com). Good Italian food and not pricey. I had the seafood pasta and it was only $16.95 and they have pre fixed meals for $24.95.
My son love the homemade garlic bread they give you when you sit down.
PS. The sodas comes in can and not from a machine.
We were pleasantly surprise with the service and prices.
We are already saying that next time we are in NYC we'll have to go for lunch and dinner.
I hope you get a chance to.
pre theater and good chineese - Ruby Foos- service is wonderful and they treat young people with dignity. Teens love it!
If you want very moderately priced Italian you might try Frutti de Mare. It's cash only and tables are packed in but it has lots of neighborhood folks and a young lively atmosphere due to its Lower East Side location (at 2nd Ave and 4th Street if I recall correctly). It's also fairly close to Blue man Group if you should decide to see that show.
