Need recommendation for great restaurant in Bergen County NJ
Planning a celebration for about 30 family members in Bergen County, New Jersey on a Sunday afternoon in mid-November. They live in the vicinity of Wyckoff-Maywood-Oradell-Ridgewood. Since I live in Washington DC and am not as familiar with that area, I need some suggestions for a restaurant in that area that serves great food. Money, in just this one case, is no object. In terms of the type of cuisine, I would say steaks, seafood, Italian...almost anything except sushi. Ages of the attendees will range from 2 years to nearly 90. We would like a really special setting and excellent food and wine. Please help with suggestions -- thanks!

I really like Jerry's, which is an Italian restaurant, in Rutherford. This is about 10-15 miles south of Oradell. Another interesting restaurant is Azucar's, in Edgewater. A really good nearby Italian place is Adichio, in Ridgewood (my recollection is that you must bring your own wine). My last Italian suggestion is Teggiano Ristorante, in Hackensack. Finally, check out Zarole, in Ridgewood, which has beautiful ambiance.

The Napa Grill is the Garden State Plaza Mall is very good. Yes, I know - A Mall? Despite it's location, it is actually very good with a menu that can be described as continental. BTW, the Mall is closed on Sunday so traffic shouldn't be a problem. The Mall is at the intersection of several major roads in Paramus, so it'll be easy for everyone to get to.
There is also a Cheesecake Factory on Route 4 in the Riverside Square Mall, just about a mile from the Garden State Plaza.

Another good restaurant is the South City Grill in I think Rutherford....But you'd be better off checking the Zagats guide or going to NJO.com, and checking the restuarant forum there...people there are helpful, and since its mostly NJ posters, you'll get a much greater number of responses

Stay away from the Stony Hill, very old-fashioned decor and food..Never been to the Saddle River, but it gets consistently good reviews..
South City Grill in Rochelle Park is excellent and has a very hip vibe, but not good for kids or the very elderly..
River Palm Terrace in Fair Lawn on Route 4 may be good, I also recommend a place called The Restaurant in Hackensack for a family get togehter..

I've eaten at Pier 17 and the food is pretty good (seafood generally), the parking & location are convenient and it's a safe overall choice.
However, the Napa Grill suggestion is right on target. I hate malls too but this restaurant really caught my eye. Good reviews from friends who went there also.

We have friends who live in Ridgewood, so here are the places they have taken us:
La Tour -6 E Ridgewood Ave
Radicchio -32 Franklin Ave
RAmsey:
Cafe Panache - 130 E Main St
Rutherford:
Cafe Matisse -167 Park Ave
These are all very nice and excellent food and wine.

Saddle River Inn is excellent - rated in the Top 5 in the NJ Zagat survey, and it's a BYO, to boot! Another recommentdation is Rebecca's in Edgewater, which is Cuban-Carribean - tiny restaurant, charming, great service and very fresh preparations. Enjoy!

There's a very nice, relatively new Italian family-style restaurant in Carlstadt called Gianna's thats been getting good reviews and which might be nice. But if money is no object why not venture out of Bergen County down to the water in Weehawken to either the Chart House or Spirito Grill?

Being that close to the CITY, why don't you just cross the river and then you'll have really first-rate places available. NJ is okay for breakfast and brunch, but for the special occasion, NYC cannot be beat. I've heard people who live west of the Hudson claim the Bright Lights of Manhattan, and I can understand.

With all due respect, Surfer, there are MANY "first rate" restaurants here in NJ - in fact, whereas I always used to assume NYC restaurants were better and therefore would always travel to the city for birthday dinners, etc., I am very happy with the many great choices right here in my own backyard. FYI, lasy December, the NY Times put out a special section on NJ restaurants and profiled the many that deserved special mention, i.e. the ones that rated the coveted "excellent" or "very good" status from their reviewers. For my money, and for the abundance of great BYO restaurants, I 'm very satisfied with the culinary offerings here in NJ. Why doncha come out here and give us a try??!!

Oh golly, Margot, you're persuasive!! Perhaps nj does deserve a revisit. Last time, I got tangled in some offramp. Have you ever noticed that if you ask anybody in nj for directions, it's all about exits. OK, OK, I'll give your restaurants another chance, but please promise you won't try to persuade me Atlantic City is like LV, NV.

Very well said, Margot55. We live in Bergen County, right on the Hudson & unless we are meeting friends from NY or LI, we don't cross the river on a weekend for dinner. We have many fine restaurants throughout NJ. In addition, we don't have to subsidize their exhorbitant rentals by paying exhorbitant menu prices!

Leona, give me a break, please, I'm still absorbing Margot's shocking news about nj food. Tell you what, you list a good Bergen Co. place (I always thought that was in ny, upstate), and I'll give you 5 good ones here in the city where I'm getting ready to walk my dogs, on CPW.
