I've heard good things about the play Hairspray currently playing in NYC and it sounds perfect for what I enjoy (song and dance). Unfortunately, the only night we have free while in NYC is January 1st and this play is sold out through ticketmaster (and no normal Wednesday matinee). I found a pair of tickets on ebay with pretty good mezzanine seats for $225. for the pair (face value is $100. per ticket) for New Years Day at 8:00 pm. Can I do better or should I jump on these? I've never participated in an auction type activity before and don't know if perhaps there are other web sites i can do better or ??? Is $100 face value for mezzanine seats outrageous? I live in a smaller town so am really a novice at all of this (dah!)Thanks for any genuine responses from others who are familiar with this type of thing. Katie
P.S. The seller does have a PERFECT ebay rating (learned that much watching 60 minutes).

Are you really prepared to pay $125 over face for each ticket? Seeing Hairspray is not a once in a lifetime event. It's not like seeing the farewell tour of a rock band that is going into permanent retirement. Hairspray will be around for a long while. Enjoy the festivities in Time Square, and make plans to return to NYC where you can get the seats you want for $100 each and also pay for the hotel with the money you save by not buying the EBay tickets.
Are you the same xxx that just bashed Rex when it was you who were wrong? Please read Katie's post again. The PAIR of tickets for $225. That's $12.50 each over face value. What hotel do you suggest Katie get for her $25 savings?
Yes, Katie, I'd grab them. I think you have little choice. As you said, they are normally $100 each, so what's $12.50 each to pay -- the fees from Ticketmaster nearly amount to that.
Sorry, maybe I wrote this wrong (nerves because it's late and I'm stressing) The face value is $100 per ticket, plus whatever ticketmaster charges??) and the asking price per ticket is $112.50 (the price of $225. is for the PAIR OF TICKETS) so sorry! Good Deal or can I do better...??
Psssst, xxx. Try rereading Katie's post. She said she can get the tickets for $225 FOR THE PAIR. Translation: $112.50 per ticket. Since face value is already $100 per ticket, that makes it only $12.50 per ticket extra, or a whopping $25 extra for both. Not bad for a very popular play you really want to see that you might not be back in town to see again. Of course that's assuming she can actually get the tickets at that price (you can be out-bid) and that they are in fact decent seats.
And Katie, to answer your question, $95-$100 is the going face value for orchestra & front row mezzanine seats for Broadway musicals. Further back in the mezzanine, and matinee performances will run a little less (can be as low as $65).
Yes, I believe this is the same xxx (xxx@xxx.xxx) who bashed Rex - xxx (xxx@xxx.xxx) usually can only post snide comments, most times he/she has NOTHING constructive to offer.
Katie, the tickets for $225 (pair) is a good value. Is this an eBay "auction" or a "buy it now?" If it is an auction you can certainly place your bid, but someone else may outbid you late in the auction (make sure you atch the auction and don't over bid. If it is a "Buy It Now" you can submit your $225 and the tickets will be yours. Good luck & let us know how you do!
Katie, forget xxx.xxx they obviously need to re-read your original post.
I have purchased tickets through ticketmaster.com before and they really do have a lot of "add on" service fees. Although the price of $112.50 per ticket may seem high to you...this is probably not far from what the seller of these ticket actually paid. (my guess is that they're trying to break even) Especially considering that this production is sold out for many months, I'D JUMP ON THESE as fast as I could say JUMP! Many times, sold out performances go for far more than the actual cost of the tickets....especially for a date like January 1st. Good luck whatever you decide. Carl
P.S. If for any reason you later regret this purchase or change your plans, wait until about the 2-3rd week in December and re-sell these and I'd guarantee you'd make a nice profit yourself. I don't think you can possibly go wrong!
oops - that was "watch" the auction. If this is an "auction - style" format, decide for yourself how much you are willing to bid and then stick to it! It's easy to get carried away. - - Good Luck!
Thanks so much for your advise. I really really appreciate it. I'm exhausted and going to call it a night. My S.O. is sound asleep so I'll sleep on this tonight and decide my fate tomorrow. I'd better consult with him afterall.
Thanks so much! good night.
Katie, you sound a bit naive...(but nice!) It only stands to reason that the closer you get to your performance date, the higher the price will be. You may want to decide soon. If you decide that you do want to sell a "sell out" Broadway performance, you're better off getting tickets sooner than later.
Meant "see" not "sell" a sold out performance. Nathan
Thanks again! All set, we got the tickets with no regrets! Katie
Katie, so glad you got the tickets! I think youd did very well at $225/pair. Enjoy the show and do post back when you return from your trip!
Although it's after the fact.... $112.50 per ticket is likely to be close to what the original purchaser paid. Ticketmatser charges $4-6 per ticket (or more) for the per ticket charge and then adds a "convenience charge" on top of that. Just to put current Broadway prices into perspective.... for a musical that may involve an orchestra and some costly sets, it's becoming typical for almost all orchestra seats to be close to $100 and most of the mezzanine seats. Even dramas, which are obviously far less costly to create from a productions and staffing costs standpoint, are becoming wildly expensive by my standards. A coworker just check on tix for "Frankie and Johnny at the Claire de Lune" - $85 for good mezzanine seats. I just went to get tix for "Dance of the Vampires" with (he's a great singer who originated the Phantom role on Broadway). The last three rows of the upper mezanine were $30 for matinees and $35 for evening shows. The next five rows of the mezzanine (still really at the far back of the theater) were were $65 and $70. All other seats in the hosue were $90 matinee and $95 evening performance. Although the show is still in previews I was unable to get anything other than $90 tix for the next few weeks. I will probably splurge for this show as I love the story (it's based on Roman Polanski's movie "The Fearless Vampire Killers" and Jim Steinman of Meatlof fame wrote the score), but it's back to TKTS for everything else!
typo correction... (missing words).... Michael Crawford is playing the lead role in Dance of the Vampires.
Owen, I don't know if the date will work for you, but Playbill is offering a one night special for Dance of the Vampires for Thursday, Nov. 21st at a reduced rate for $65 for the $95 seats. I think the code is JBLAST, but you can check at playbill.com. I called Ticketmaster yesterday with the code and got two center orchestra seats, so I'm really excited. And yes, I also had to pay the ticketmaster surcharges. It came to $145.50 for the 2 tickets, or $72.75 each, but I still felt it was worth it since I wasn't able to get the tickets in person. Good Luck.
Thanks for the heads up Judy. That must be a new promo? I just signed up for Playbill.com a few days ago and hadn't noticed it. I've been on a mailing list for theatremania.com for awhile and on occasion get some good offers from them. My timing is terrible - I have a work committment to be in Syracuse for most of the week and don't return until Friday night. I'll keep scanning Playbill to see if I can find another deal before the show gets out of previews. I haven't heard any reports about it yet but the concept, the writer and the performer seem likely to produce something fun and worth seeing.
Gee, I have tickets for Hairspray for Dec 18th. Maybe I should sell them on ebay?
Owen, I really enjoyed Dance of The Vampires. I'm a big Michael Crawford fan from way back. I hope you'll enjoy it!
for what it's worth, I too have paid for tickets on ebay. Decent seats in Orchestra or mezzanine (2) for a sold out performance go for around $260. give or take $25. Actually, not bad! I've found that the majority of folks selling tickets on ebay originally purchased them for their own benefit. Due to something unexpectant, they're forced to cancel their trip to NYC and just trying to recoup their original investment. NOT so with ticket brokers, they're in the business to make money (rightfully so since this is their livelihood). If you want the best price for sold out performances in NYC around Xmas or NY's...ebay is the best. Consider it kind of a lot of "mom and pop" shops under one roof. I wouldn't be surprised if lots of those tickets are scooped up by ticket brokers who put them back on a web site a week or two later marked up 25% or so. If you're looking for last minute tickets, ebay is the best I've found so far. I'd love to hear if others have found better. I'm kind of a last minute guy who is often in the market for such tickets (drives my S.O .crazy!)
