Need one way car rental Las Vegas to Phoenix

We are traveling from Las Vegas to Phoenix over 4 days in late March 2014. Our road trip includes a visit to the Grand Canyon and Sedona. Does anyone have any suggestions or cautions for this one way car rental?

If you have nothing to do or see in Phoenix, just drive the 5 hours from Sedona back to Las Vegas.
Are you going to stop at Hoover dam on the way or coming back?
You can return the car in LV at the central car rental facility and ride a shuttle to the airport (free).
IMO car rentals from LV are cheaper than from Phoenix. Stay away from Fox!

Why stay away from Fox? Had a great experience with them in Denver.

Are you flying into Vegas, needing to pick up the car at the airport. Or is a local or hotel pickup okay? Local offices usually close around 6pm and are closed on Sunday, but probably have lower rates. Some of them will pick you up at your hotel.

At LV the free rental car shuttle takes you to a central rental car facility that has every brand but Fox. The Fox shuttle will pick you up from outside the rental facility and take you to their lot at the south end of LV Blvd.
I have had problems with Fox vehicles from LV and SLC and will no longer rent from them anywhere.
If you use Hotwire or some other blind bidding site you can get a rental car that is safe for the same as Fox's often unsafe vehicles.
Fly in and out of LAS even if you are not spending the night.

Thanks for the prompt responses. We are flying into LV, staying there to relax for a few days. We are contracted to bring a vehicle to Canada from Phoenix. We wanted to do a quick visit at the GC and Sedona (which we heard was worth a stop) on our way to Phoenix. Hence our request for information about a one way car rental from LV to Phoenix. We have found a rate of about $250, but sometimes there are better deals around. Thanks.

The huge National Association of Broadcasters convention is in Vegas the first week of April, so they are probably going to be tight about letting cars leave the area the week prior.

In your situation I would fly to Phoenix and rent the car than head to Sedona for a night. Go to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon for at least 2 nights. Head to LV with a stop at Hoover Dam. I think one or 2 nights in Las Vegas is plenty YMMV.
Return the car to Phoenix and drive the other car back to Canada.

Yes, I'd actually do that as well, but if it turns out to be cheaper to do a one way car rental, then that's ok.

We're doing this exact thing (also in in late March), less the stops in Sedona and the Grand Canyon.

We've booked through Enterprise, $189 for a five day rental, no drop off fees when picked up and dropped of at major airports (per Enterprise).

Also, unlimited mileage when picked up and returned to major airports (once again, per Enterprise rep).

I'm not sure but I think the others maybe misunderstand your needs . . . My guess is once you collect the car you are transporting you need to drive straight back to Canada as directly as possible? Right?

That is why you want the one way rental and doing your sightseeing before getting to Phoenix. If so --- You are sort of stuck paying the high one way drop off fees (if you can get one)

It actually might have been better to fly into San Diego or even LA.

janisj - You nailed it. We fly into LV on March 25, have 3 days for rest and entertainment, then hope to rent a car to get to Phoenix, visiting GC and Sedona on the way. On March 31 we head towards Toronto to deliver our contracted vehicle. The best rental rate we have found is around $250 for the Friday to Monday rental.

Melnq8 - congratulations on your very good rate. I have scoped out the Enterprise site, but can`t seem to match your rate. Did you have access to a special rate or discount coupon.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts. We are still considering options and would appreciate any further input.

teacherCanada -

I booked via USAA, which offered a slight discount. I also booked over a month ago, which might have some bearing, and my booking is for a week, so I got the weekly rate.

You might find a lower price if you book for a week, which would include the time you're in Vegas.

Actually my booking is for five days but we were given the weekly rate.

Enterprise charges .20 a mile over 150 miles per day on one way rentals, but this fee doesn't apply if collected from and returned to an airport, per the representative I spoke with.

Hertz is $180 for three days (72 hrs) if you have AAA or CAA membership and if you rent the car from Hertz Local Location #6, East Sahara. This location will pick you up if your hotel is within 15 minutes,( call them at 702-641-5700 to verify. )

I think the rate is around $210 without CAA member card. But you might have another discount such as airline freq flyer?

Does your Canadian car insurance cover you for a rental car in the states? If so you might want to bring a copy with you. "Credit card collision coverage" only covers the rental car, not any damage that you might do to another car.

clarkgriswold: Thanks so much. I went on the Hertz site. I have CAA. We can rent a Toyota Corolla for $200 (Canadian $$) approx. for our three days. Thanks very much for your input. I doubt we will get a better deal. That total includes a $100 drop off fee, but no CDW. Many thanks.

A lot of options are available as far as the car rentals re concerned. You can rent from small cars to big cars depending on your budget.
