I really enjoyed Whaler's Cove on Kauai. However, be sure to book in the building that is ocean-front, the other one sits kinda behind the pool area. Nice complex. A coworker usually rents at Kuhio Shores, and that sits right on the ocean as well, so you might want to look there.

Kiahuna Plantation in Poipu Beach has several buildings that are ocean front. Great place.

We have stayed here" http://www.vrbo.com/36456 either 4 or 5 times now. It can't get much closer to the water!! (But it's not a beach -- just a lava shore) We spend all our waking hours on the lanai, which has terrific comfy furniture. Falling asleep to the sound of the surf is wonderful. We leave the lanai doors open all night.

We like almost everything about the place. The only caveat is that the second bedroom has windows facing the elevator area so that someone sleeping there can be disturbed by people coming and going. Although if you have little kids they probably would sleep right through it.

We stayed in condo 123 at Whalers Cove. (1 means the building closest to the water, not the one that is situated with the pool between it and the ocean, 2 means 2nd floor and 3 is the 3rd unit from the end.) Fantastic views, enormous lanai and a super private pool and spa - cuz no one else seemed to be around.

Agree about Whalers Cove also try Poipu Shores - less expensive but right on the water in Poipu and I'd look at Homeaway.com or VRBO.com for some great deals. Highly recommend Luxury Poipu which we rented thru either Home away or VRBO - it was awesome and with a 40 foot lanai that sits right above the lava rocks you can't get much closer.

Big Island I have only stayed at the hotels so can't help there.

we liked Hale Kona Kai on the Big Island. Ocean front, but not beach front. Has a nice pool where you can feel the spray from the surf on the rocks below, and watch the turtles swimming right there. It's in Kailua Kona, right off the main drag, so a short walk to restaurants and shops.

I've stayed at Poipu Palms which is a very small condo complex. Very nice views and reasonably priced. On the Big Island,in waikaloa we loved Hali'i Kai. More upscale but beautifully appointed and very quiet.

Second the Hale Kona Kai on the BI it has great oceanfront units and the ones ending in 12 or 13 have a little bigger lanais and the condo is easy walking distance to local restaurants.
