Need Oahu and Kauai Lodging help
My wife and I are making our first trip to Hawaii and have decided to spend our first week on Oahu (sightseeing, Pearl Harbor, shopping, go, go go,), and our second week on Kauai (doing nothing, room service, wine and cheese, beachfront). Any lodging suggestions would be helpful. I think we would like to stay a short bit away from highly populated areas on Ohau, and completely away from highly populated areas on Kauai.

There are no "highly populated" areas on Kauai. It's mostly rural with scattered small towns. IMHO, the most beautiful hotel, grounds, and pools are at the Grand Hyatt in Poipu Beach on the south end of Kauai.

We just spent six nights at Koa Kea in Poipu (south, where the sun usually is). Loved it! Right at the beach, superb friendly service, small boutique low rise hotel just one year old. Check the reviews on Trip Advisor. They're stellar. Not cheap, but there are some packages. Good restaurants nearby, and Koa Kea has one of their own.

We loved the Grand Hyatt in Kauai!
we did have dinner at Red Salt at Koa Kea..it used to be a very average oceanfront motor lodge but really spent some money on this place..its small and expensive but very hip..its next door to the Marriotts Waikola vacation club.
Try expedia.com to get some ideas on pricing.
Royal Hawaiian hotel in O'ahu is our favorite but there are so many great hotels in Waikiki.

For Kauai, amidst these Poipu-centric suggesions, no one has mentioned the St. Regis in Princeville on the lovely north shore, so I thought I would give you one more choice to be get befrazzled about. It is recently remodeled and rebranded and is getting mixed reviews, but if I could afford it and needed to stay in a hotel, that is where I'd be in heartbeat. The north shore of the island is by far my favorite part, but there aren't as many hotel choices as the south and east shores. We stay in home rentals in Hanalei and that suits us to a T. Enjoy your trip.

We just stayed for two nights at the Outrigger Regency Beachwalk in Waikiki.
http://www.outrigger.com/hotels-reso...y-on-beachwalk or http://www.oyster.com/hawaii/hotels/...on-beach-walk/
It's considered more of a "condo" than a hotel room I guess because it has a kitchen. We really liked the contemporary / modern style of it. We had a one bedroom which was perfect for us (me, DH and 7 yo DD). But it doesn't have the usual on-site hotel amenities (restaurant, pool, etc.) which suited us just fine. It's in a good location, a short walk to everything.

If you want to be a bit away from it all but still on the beach on Oahu, consider the New Otani Hotel. It's fairly reasonable (with some special rates from time to time) and on the Diamond Head end of Waikiki Beach, near the Waikiki Aquarium. It's a smaller hotel rather than a mega-resort. It's a bit quieter but you can still walk to Waikiki. It's along Kapiolani Park, so you can get in your morning jog or other exercise as well. They have a beautiful open air lanai where they serve meals (beautiful for a sunset dinner). Last time I was there, they also had live music at their bar. Very relaxing ambiance.

The majority of resorts and hotels on Oahu are right in Waikiki. Some on the beach, some with ocean views, some set back. New Otani is a great suggestion (but it doesn't have a pool). Hyatt, Outrigger(s), Moana Surfrider, Royal Hawaiian, Sheraton, Embassy Suites, are all fine hotels. If you post a price range and any specific ammenities you seek, or post the short-list of the places you are considering, we'll be able to help more specifically.

The Moana Surfrider is lovely for Oahu. The ocean view from Princess Wing of the Princess Kaiulani Hotel directly across the street from it is less expensive and very nice. The Moana is one of the oldest hotels there, very historical (in fact, they give tours) and with a veranda complete with rocking chairs, but the rooms may be small for you. The Sheraton Tower next to it is modern.

The Hyatt in Poipu is set in a gorgeous tropical setting. My favorite with great pools and restaurants in Kauai.
The drawback for me with the St. Regis in Princeville, is that when they remodeled, they didn't add balconies to their rooms. Who wants to stay in Hawaii and not be able to sit out on their balcony with morning coffee or a glass of wine at sunset?

oh my gosh, you're way out of my price range of expertise for Oahu (i'm in the under $100 category -haha). I think for that price you could look at pretty much any of the high-end places in Waikiki: Halekulani, Royal Hawaiian, Moana Surfrider, New Otani, etc.

I've stayed at both the Hyatt and in Princeville at what is now the St. Regis. You didn't say when you are going....if it's in the winter months...stay in Poipu...if it's the summer, stay at the St. Regis. It's fantastic..even with out the balconies...and the view from the lobby, beach, restaurants in the best in Hawaii...you'll see sunsets over Hanalei bay and Bali Hai...Mt. MakaNA ..it's truly the most beautiful part of the island..but too wet in winter months.

we have stayed many trips to kauai in anahola bay, its midway between lihue airport and princeville at hwy marker 13 which is a couple miles from kapaa. we rented a house on the beach and had wonderful times on a pristine, very quiet beach, we never ever wanted to leave. google anahola and see what is available in your price range. you have to drive to get groceries but you will be living in paradise. i think the tv show "lost" is filmed a lot on anahola bay. check it out!! anahola has very few tourists.
