Need lodging help in Connecticut
My family will be traveling through Hartford CT. and would like a nice place to stay, preferably on the water for a few days. Ultimately, we are heading to the Lakeville, CT area so we would like to be no farther than 2 hrs. from Lakeville wherever we wind up staying. I was reading about Mystic and Stonington and wanted to know some other options.

The Stonington Inn in Stonington is a great place on the water.

Two other places to consider on the Ct shoreline directly on the water are Waters Edge Resort in Westbrook, and the Madison Beach Hotel in Madison. Both have easily Googled websites. I've stayed and eaten at Waters Edge without any negative experiences and have had many a cocktail and bucket of steamers at the second floor balcony lounge at the MBH and that's great too. Never stayed there as I live too close.
These are probably within 2 hours of Lakeville (barely).

Many good places have already been recommended; I just thought I'd weigh in on Old Saybrook.
I've never stayed at Saybrook Point Inn but have heard good things about it. Old Saybrook has more to do than years ago...it has a walkable downtown with eateries, shops, etc. It is, however, a small town, so whether you'd be happy there would depend on how much you like to have available to do. If you have good weather, imho, the beautiful beach would be more than enough - but that of course is a personal choice. Keep in mind that Connecticut beaches are on the Sound not the ocean, so you won't get the waves of the Atlantic, if that matters to you.
