Need help... which part of Phoenix / Scottsdale should a family with kids visit??

Hi, We will be travelling to Phoenix in April. We are a family of four with two very young children.

Our recent vacations have worked well since we have rented a house (vs. staying in a hotel room).

I have spent HOURS researching where to stay, but having such little knowledge of the area and with so many different areas of Phoenix to choose from, I feel a little in the dark.

We are ideally looking for a villa in a private vacation community so that we can take advantage of some resort type ammenities, yet still have the kitchen and space that a condo or house will offer. I would really like for it to be upscale and on the higher end of luxury. Proximity to things to do would be great, but with nap schedules, etc... we will be around the homestead a little more.

I have been looking on vrbo and googling various "communities" such as grayhawk, troon, boulders... but I just can't make sense of it.

Please help. Just point me in a direction or suggest a few other places to research that might work for us.

THANKS !!!!

anyone??

We are also open to other options than a private house rental... we'd try luxurylink or even priceline (for two rooms) if I could figure out what we'd be likely to end up with.

just need help narrowing down where to stay and some ideas of properties.
thanks

took a very quick look at vrbo. I would normally never look at the Phoenix area because i live there. Just from my quick look, i would eliminate most of the scottsdale ones because they tend to be in the northern part of the city which i think of as far away from most places of interest (might just be a bias since i recall when there was nothing but cactus out there).

In the phoenix listing, i noticed a couple at the Pointe. I think that is a good area - at the Phoenix mtn preserve yet close enough to everything.

I don't have much to add except, i'm not sure you should eliminate north scottsdale area as that certainly fits your quest for a luxury locale. With the freeways close at hand central phx is not that far away.
The scottsdale locations you mention, ie. troon etc certainly are in great locations. Lots of beuatiful desert scenery and not that far from central scottsdale.

thanks so much to both of you for your help...

I have come up with another option that might work for us which is the Westin Kierland in Scottsdale, and the Westin Kierland Villas, which have kitchens and are located next to the regular Westin. This seems like a very kid oriented property from what I can see.

The advantage for us is that we can use our starwood points to pay for our stay (not sure we can use them at the villas, but if so all the better, otherwise we'll have a free stay in a regular hotel room and be sitting in the dark at 7:30pm when the kids go to bed.... not ideal, but free is hard to beat).

The Westin Kierland Resort and Villas is in a great location, with easy freeway and surface street driving to anywhere in Scottsdale and also in central Phoenix. Plus, in the immediate area there is excellent shopping and many movie theaters. I think you'll be very happy with this choice.
