I am trying to explore alternatives to Cape Cod for the Labor Day weekend, and was wondering if anyone could steer me towards another spot in New England with nice beaches and a place to stay nearby! Any places with beaches to recommend in other areas along the coast of Massachussetts or Rhode Island perhaps? Thanks so much!

Try southern RI - Watch Hill, Narragansett, Misqamicut(sp?)
or North Shore of Mass - Plum Island (Newburyport) Crane's Beach (Ipswich), Gloucester
I'm suggesting the same thing.
The area called "South County" in Rhode Island has gotten good publicity in the last few years from the national media.
Bunch of info at:
http://www.southcountyri.com
Besides beaches the area is near other tourist sites such as Mystic CT, Block Island, Newport RI, Foxwoods (Casino).
I have to agree. Watch Hill is one of our favorite beaches. The waves are awesome! We've stayed nearby in Misquamicut, but you have to drive to Watch Hill and finding a parking spot nearby is difficult. Go to the free beach (you have to walk up the hill)...they have the best waves.
There are some places to stay right in Watch Hill (Watch Hill Court?), but very pricey.
Debbie hit the main problem with the South County Beaches- there are not many (reasonably priced) places to stay that are within walking diatance of the beaches, so you are forced to drive and park, along with what will seem to be a few million other people from the greater Providence area. The beaches are nice, though.
Just got back from 5 days in Watch Hill, RI. We stayed at the Ocean House because they have their own wonderful beach - NO rocks, clean and great surf! The Ocean House is a far cry from a Marriott or Westin BUT it offers room with breakfast and dinner included - food is VERY good!
We say staying there is like staying in a cottage - no a/c, very informal, very 'dated'....but we enjoyed our 4th stay there very much.
Anon,Does the Ocean House have a website? Thanks,Deb
Yes, www.oceanhousewatchhill.com
