need help for planning a aug trip
We will be arriving in Portland in late Aug. Should we travel to the Mount Hood area and down to Crater Lake and come back to Portland on the coast? Any suggestions ?
What things should we do and are do not miss this. Any help is welcome. Thanks'

It would be a bit tight time-wise (2 weeks would be better), but you could do a big circle starting in Portland, then the Columbia River Gorge/Mt Hood area, then the Bend/Sisters area (since you like to hike, I would definitely include this area for 2-3 nights if possible), then a night at Crater Lake before heading out to the coast for a couple nights and back to Portland.

I agree with NWWanderer, but I would do it in the opposite order. That would have you heading south on the coast, which is easier to pull off and stop at the various sights.
One thing to think about is that many places book up far in advance, so I would make lodging decisions now and book asap. Many places on the coast have a 2 or 3 night minimum in the summer, so depending on where you want to stay that might make you juggle your other plans a bit.

Good point, mms, I agree.
One of my favorite places to stay on the mid-coast, the Overleaf in Yachats, does not have a minimum stay requirement (or at least they didn't as of last summer and I just checked their website and don't see anything different) so it's a good place to keep in mind for a one night stay if you need it to work with your itinerary.

If you want to go a little further south from Crater Lake, you might check out OR Caves National Monument. one of the little known historic grand lodges of the west (OR Caves Lodge) would be a great place to stay and maybe allow 1/2 day or so for the cave. If they offer the wild cave tour, that might be something of interest. haven't done the wild cave tour there, but did one in Carlsbad, very interesting and unique. If you do Crater Lake, consider the boat ride to Wizard Island.
