Need Help Deciding - Maui Kaanapli area

I'm so confused. We're a family of four (kids 13, 15 - both girls). I've booked 8 nights at the Hyatt in a terrace view room. It's a single room with two queen beds. Basically no view. We typically don't spend a lot of time in the room so I try to book the nicest hotel we can afford with the least expensive room. But... the last few years, we've been fortunate enough to have separate rooms from the girls when we were on vacation. I'm wondering if we will miss the privacy of our own room. Last year was a cruise and the year prior was a condo like resort in St. Lucia. The girls will sleep on the couch without complaint. So... for about the same price as the Hyatt, I can get a one bedroom suite at the Embassy. I know that the pool/grounds aren't as nice - but I'm wondering how much of a difference it is. Can you compare the location of the two places? How about the pools/grounds? I really can't decide! All opinions welcome.

Personally I wouldn't consider sharing a room with teenagers a vacation !

The Hyatt is on Kaanapali beach, walking distance to Whalers Village etc whereas the Embassy is a couple of miles further north - but still beachfront, big pool. A friend has a timeshare there and gladly goes yearly.

I'd go for the space

If you want a hotel atmosphere, consider the one bedroom time share suites at the Marriott. We loved it when we were there in 2004. Its the size of two hotel rooms so you have a master bedroom with a bath and a living area with a pull out queen size sofa and a bath. There is a small kitchen area with a microwave, toaster, dishwasher, fridge and coffee maker. If you want to have a light breakfast in, its easy to do. We loved the pool at the Marriott as well and its a quick walk to the Whalers shopping village. Next summer we are staying at the Ka'anapali Alii, next door to the Marriott. We have an ocean view with a bedroom, den and living room that sleeps six and we are probably paying less than what you will pay at the Hyatt.

Here's a map that shows the locations of the two. The home page has lots of other Maui maps.

The Hyatt is closer to Lahaina and as pspercy says, is close enough to walk to some of the shops.

Embassy Vacation Resort is a couple miles north of the Hyatt and appears to be in a more crowded (hotels & condos) area.

But, I would also go for privacy and take the Embassy.

Perhaps you can find other alternatives at www.vrbo.com

Lots of Maui info:

Dawnct - We would have loved the Kaanapali Ali - but it's $120 per night more! I'm sure we could pay less if we could travel at a time other than Easter... but that's when we are going. And the Marriott is booked.

Does anyone have any other ideas? Even though I haven't been there before, I'm just not fond of the Embassy location.

I realize you probably want a hotel, but consider The Mahana - it's condos and you can actually get 1 bedroom units with 2 bathrooms (we did !!). There are a few, the rooms end in the number "15" I believe, i.e. 815 .. you can always call them and ask. The living room couch opens for a bed and with teenagets 2 bathrooms would be a Godsend The Mahana also has 2 bedroom units. The beach in front of the Mahana is narrow but if you go to the left it wide and nice. ALL the units at Mahana are full ocean front by the way which is a big added plus.

Embassy Suites is OK - space wise it is certainly far better then one room.

Having a condo is great because you can have a few meals in if you want, have more privacy and even a washer/dryer meaning you do not need to take so many clothes ! Somehow doing laundry on Maui never felt like the hardship it is home Sitting on the lanai watching the sunset while the dryer spins beats being home any day !!!

It would be so much more fun for the girls at the Hyatt, I think. Have stayed next door to the Embassy Suites and you'll probably have to drive everywhere from there.

I love the whole Whaler's Village area so I lean toward the Hyatt.

Can you get adjoining rooms at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel. It's not the Hyatt, but acceptable. It is quite laid back.

Please take a look at the Maui Eldorado condos. They're located just on the other side of Black Rock from the Sheraton. We stayed there 3 weeks this past April. Outrigger manages the condo, you can go to their website and check the rooms out. There are also private owners who lease their condos out, sometimes at a better price that Outrigger.

We just stayed at the Embassy with 2 teenagers. The hotel was great - I was pleasantly surprised. The rooms have just been remodeled & they have huge, modern bathrooms. The only thing I did not like was that the closet in the master bedroom was accessible from the bedroom & the bath so it did not provide one with a sense of privacy in the bedroom but that is still a lot better than sharing the room with the kids. The grounds & the pool are pretty good as well. Even though one has to drive to the main Kaanapali beach, the hotel has a decent beach too which is less crowded so it is not necessary to drive all the time. We parked at Whalers village when we went to Kaanapali & any restaurant/Food Court location would validate the parking ticket even if it was not a $10 purchase as required. We were very happy with the Embassy Suites.

LLaros, did you look on VRBO? That's where I found our Alii unit and it is being handled through a property manager so I feel confident that my funds are secure. I also bought a cancellation policy as well. We rented a one bedroom with a den that sleeps 6. I think its around $350 per night. The Hyatt has to be close to that and you can't cook to save money.
