We're taking our teen daughter for two nights to NYC in early November and would like a good hotel close to good shopping and reasonable distance from theatres; don't want to spend over $600/night. What are your favorite, well-located NYC hotels that have rooms that will accommodate three?

Hampton Inn Times Square North.

Not in the crazy part of TS but close to theaters and lots of restaurant choices. The rooms are bigger than most NYC hotel rooms and are good when you have 3 or 4 people in the room. Free breakfast.

Another option would be the Hilton Garden Inn, not far away. Both on 8th and my favorite area of the city.

Well you're coming at the most expensive time of year but $600 per night is substantial - depending on what you mean by "good" hotel. If you mean luxury hotel - $600 won;t cover it at that time of year. but obviously there are many of the more modest chains available for that.

What are you looking for in a hotel - in terms of amenities and style (traditional or modern)?

If it were me I would NOT stay in/right near Times Square but look for something a short walk - 10 minutes or so away - perhaps Central Park South or a little further east than Times Square.

The Affinia Group is moderate and well-regarded and has suites with a number of room/bed configurations that might fit your needs better than just a single bedroom with one bath.

Since your price point is higher, my other recommendation would be the Muse, a Kimpton hotel. We stayed there over Thanksgiving one year and the location was fabulous. A short walk in either direction to our Broadway theater and Rock Center and although it's in the Times Square area the street outside the hotel was not hectic nor noisy. LOVE Kimptons in general and LOVE the Muse. A two bedded room will be big enough for 3, although not a really large room.

With only 2 nights you really need to streamline your attack, choose your shows and decide where exactly you want to shop, then find a good hotel that's convenient.

The Muse is offering double double rooms (2 double beds) for some weekend nights at that time for about $500 per night - with advance purchase. Rates during the week seem to be significantly higher - so I would check now and if interested lock in a great rate.

Try The Kimberley. It's an all suite hotel.

The Kimberley is great, but it's on the east side and not near any theaters. I personally like both is Starrs' recommendations, but the Muse is also a great hotel. You might also want to look at the brand new Courtyard on Broadway at 54th, which is far enough from the crush but still close to everything.

We loved The Refinery Hotel last year. Just throwing it out as another option. Fun staff and might be fun for your daughter.

My favorite restaurant in the area is the West Bank Café. It's perfect for a pre-theater meal and we had a fabulous Thanksgiving lunch/dinner (4pm) one year. I visit every time I'm in NYC and I love it. Very good food and excellent service, but not in the craziness of TS/ theater district - but an easy short walk to a show -

We were there during the busiest week of the year and opted to eat at the restaurant at the hotel. I've never had a bad meal at a Kimpton hotel's restaurant.

It's a perfect location for a hotel, especially for a short visit. If you go to Rock Center (and do go, especially to the Top of the Rock for the view), know there's a food court and casual restaurants underneath. It's also a great place to get a Starbuck's coffee (or other) and sit inside, at a warm place and watch the skaters on the rink -

If it doesn't have to be in the neighborhood of the hotel, I highly recommend the Colicchio & Sons Tap Room in the Meatpacking District. Casual-ish atmosphere and really really good food!

Will proceed with 2 of my current personal favorites; both moderately priced, by Manhattan standards, and both lively, fun places with great food. Both require booking ahead:

GATO is Bobby Flay's new restaurant just north of Houston Street. Great people watching. Open Kitchen. Interesting and creative food, with plainer dishes for the non-adventurous. Open kitchen. Casual dress. A current favoritie of mine. Many dishes have some heat, but none are searingly hot. Book as far ahead as possible. Excellent desserts, too. (Chocolate Crema Catalana personal calorie-laden favorite)

MARTA is a new-this-year Italian on East 29th Street. In the empire of Danny Meyer, famous for Shake Shack and a number of fine-dining spots. Super crisp-crust pizza. Fantastic service. Wide range of non-pizza dishes. Wood burning ovens, grills with fire spewing. Recommended the mushroom pizza, the chicken, meatballs, and many other things. (Do not recommend short rib unless you like fatty cuts) Open for lunch and dinner.

I've stayed at the Muse and do like it a lot, also. I am mainly in NYC for theater, so like to be close to them. I can't imagine what a balcony would add, though, it's on a very narrow, dark street as so many are in NY due to just tall buildings in that area, and so the balcony must just overlook 46th St, if it was on the side or back, it would be really bad. There's an old church almost across and the Laura Pels theater.

Thanks, everyone, for the awesome recommendations! We ended up switching our room at the Muse from a double-bedded room to a king executive suite and it was large -- over 400 sq.ft. Two separated areas - king bedroom, and sitting room with fold-out sofa for our daughter. Room in the bedroom for a chaise lounge, desk, additional chair; large bathroom. We really enjoyed the Muse and I would happily stay there again.

We also really enjoyed our overall stay; for the first time on a visit to NYC we did not try to pack in sights. Daughter asked not to see a play but do a lot of shopping. So we did (she especially liked Topshop and similar), we strolled, we ate well (Craft, Nobu Next Door, a Daniel Boulud restaurant) and leisurely, and the only "sight" we saw was walking the High Line, on a beautiful sunny fall day. It was the most relaxing trip to the City I've ever taken.
