Need B&B recommendations for Galena, Illinois

We are going to Galena, IL in late October for a romantic getaway weekend and need some suggestions for a great B&B. Preferably well located, a little upscale maybe (we want to splurge a little) with comfortable rooms & good breakfasts. Thanks!!

I'm interested in Galena also. Have you been there? Why would we enjoy Galena? Is Octtober the best month to go? Thanks for your information.

We have been to Galena often and have stayed many different places. My favorite is Longhollow Point Resort. It is not in the center of town though - about a 5 minute ride outside. It is located on the grounds of Eagle Ridge with a Golf course. All rooms have a see through fireplace and a jacuzzi tub. Very cutely decorated with balconys. There is and indoor pool, jacuzzi and small bar - it is designed to resemble a ski lodge rathere than a bed and breakfast but it is our favorite. If you want a bed and breakfast I have stayed at Desoto House - not very romantic but a fantastic restaurant for dinner. The Stillman house which we enjoyed and was right near Grant's house. Very cute room with lots of antiques and great breakfast. My friend swears by the Hellman House which is on top of the hill in Galena. It looks beautiful but has always been booked solid when we go - must be good.
Also for dinner don't miss Fried Green Tomatos - great italian restuarant. Good Luck.

I've been to Galena a couple of times and don't recommend the places I've stayed, BUT there is a website address that I have been looking at that looks great - www.galena-il.com. Galena in October is beautiful. (I also didn't like Fried Green Tomatoes - couldn't understand all the fuss - it was mediocre to me; but we went late on a Sunday nite) A friend just went there and ate at The Perry Street Brasserie & really liked the food.

When we lived in Chicago, we had a vacation house at the Galena territory. The inn there is called the Eagle Ridge Inn and it's certainly upscale although not a true B&B. Some of the rooms have fireplaces, pretty furnishings, a choice of a couple restaurants and a great Sunday brunch. They used to have a harpist in the dining room on Saturday nights and live country music in the bar. Indoor pretty pool and great golf courses. It's 7 miles east of the town of Galena. The DeSoto Hotel is the historic old one on Main Street, but I've not stayed, only eaten there. Haven't been to Galena for about 5 years so not current with restaurants. It's a lovely little town.

Frankly, I would put Galena, Illinois on my list of "over-rated" places to go.

It IS a very scenic area, with rolling hills and beautiful fall colors. However, driving through the bluffs and hills in that general area will give you that visual satisfaction. There's even a waterfall at Apple Canyon Lake (billed as the highest point in the state of Illinois...yippee!)

In my opinion, the town of Galena itself is overhyped and overpriced. Too many stuffy Northshore patrons going to the "country" to get away from their problems....only to hear their cell phones ringing while dining at Fried Green Tomatoes. Nice atmosphere and very attentive service at this restaurant, but bring a jacket...they like to keep it cold in there!

For romance and solitude, I'd recommend going a little further north to the Door County area of Wisconsin. The fall colors are beautiful and the sunsets on the lake in the town of Ephraim are breathtaking. It might be a little difficult to find a place to stay in the fall, but well worth your trip.

Gosh, does that mean I was a " stuffy northshore patron going to the country?" I thought I was escaping Chicago to enjoy fresh air and wildlife, perhaps play a little golf. There's some history here as well as some good restaurants. Is there something wrong with that? Galena is certainly worth a visit. Go for it, Laurie.

The Goldmoor, Galenas Premier B&B Country Inn looks like a great romantic getaway. They have beautiful rooms and suites. Also, the cottages there look wonderful! I found it at www.galena-il.com.
