Need an August '11 CA campground for an RV

Hi,

I'm looking for a campground we can go to this August w/ an RV not more than three hours from SF. Almost everything is booked, so any suggestions on hidden gems would be wonderful.

I had a big RV trip planned we had to cancel due to work. Now we have to take an RV out for the weekend or the kids (5 & 7) will mutiny.

Thanks

Would you consider Lassen or is that too far inland?

You might also find something near Lake Tahoe.

This is a tall order since it is the middle of summer, but there is hope - esspecially if you are willing to expand your range.

Lassen is a great park. It is more than 3 hours from SF, but the drive isn't bad. I-5 to Redding and then Hwy 44 east to the park. There are some other campgrounds up that way too - my parents like the one at or near Burney Falls.

If you want to go to Kings Canyon, none of the campgrounds are reservable, so if you get there rather early mid-week, you should be fine.

North along the coast, what about Humboldt County - Patrick's Point, Prairie Creek Redwoods, and other state parks up there probably have availability.

If you don't need hookups, national forest campgrounds are a good choice.

Calaveras Big Trees State Park has openings for August 11, but not for the 12th. If you could manage a Sunday - Monday combination and your RV isn't over 30 feet then you will be able to find spots. We always stay at North Grove, but I'm sure the other campground is nice too. Calaveras Big Tress is one of our favorites and they have hikes, river access (you have to drive to it), the town of Arnold isn't far if you need a city. You can drive up to Lake Alpine for a day.

Thanks for the tips - Burney was stop #1 on our original RV trip. We'll probably only have 2 nights so not looking to go too far, but I'll check in to the above spots for mid August - maybe we can get away mid-week which would certainly help!
