Need advise(s) for travel from DFW to Destin FL

Hello all,

My family is planning 7 days trip to Destin FL this summer (in June), we had been in Destin before one summer. This time we like to come back but like to discover other places like Pensacola and Clear Water. Since i will drive pass Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, I like to visit one or two places in those states. Maybe an overnight stay there, but no more than that.
I'm travel with wife and 3 kids in elementary grades.
My questions are:
1. Please advise a place or two that must see on the way to Destin, FL?
2. I heard some place in Pensacola you can crabbing on the beach, do you know where?
3. Which beach is better view and stay between Destin and Clear Water?

Thank you for your advises.

Why do you want to drive all the way from DFW? Can't you fly to New Orleans or a Florida airport?
What you need to know about crabbing in Florida:

It's kind of unclear to me where you want to stay. Destin, Clearwater (about 7 hours away), or Pensacola? Of the three I would pick Pensacola Beach. Perfect for a family with small kids.

I've never heard of crabbing from the beach there. We always put out crab traps from our dock.

And tomfuller, I would imagine flying is a bit cost prohibitive considering there are five people in the family. It's not a bad drive...just long and boring.

Take the kids to the Naval Air Museum on Pensacola NAS. It's truly a world-class place and the kids will love the simulators and stuff. Also, on the base is Fort Barrancas and the lighthouse. There is a cute zoo in Gulf Breeze down Hwy 98 toward Navarre. There is a nice children's museum in downtown Pensacola.

We used to vacation in Destin when we lived in DFW, and our son and family still do. They make the drive in one day with their kids, though it is a long day! They have recommended the Naval Air Museum as well--their kids loved it. The battleship Alabama is a short ways south of Mobile...might be interesting too. It's so close you can see it from I-10 as you pass, so it can't be anytime at all to reach it!

Clearwater is long drive from Destin! 7-8 hours, and for the time of year you are going, I'd stick with Destin. The water is usually clearer there than Clearwater, and it's a prettier color. There is absolutely no point in making the longer drive...except possible the fact that Clearwater will be "out-of-season" rates then, and Destin very much "in-season".
