Need advice for girls' trip to New England
Six of us want to take a girls' trip in early September for a long weekend, to New England. Requirements: Water (not necessarily a hotel on the water if there are lots of venues -- restaurants, etc. with lovely water views; great seafood; atmosphere and nice wines. We are in our mid-40s and are leaving the husbands and kids at home. Prefer a destination easily reachable from a Southwest Airlines city -- for example, Providence, RI, Hartford, CT, Manchester. Would love a place like Martha's Vinyard or Nantucket but think they would be too time-consuming to get to for a weekend trip. We are completely unfamiliar with New England resorts and lovely hotels. Can anyone give me some tips? Thanks!

Fly into Providence. Rent a car at the airport, and a 30-40 minute drive will take you to Bristol, Newport, or Narragansett. I'd suggest a web search, destination Rhode Island, and you'll find plenty of places to stay and things to do.

Newport is a great choice. I would also recommend Portsmouth NH (about an hour from MHT) and staying at Wentworth-by-the-Sea. The location is beautiful but you are outside the city and would have to do a lot of driving. Portsmouth has a lot of great restaurants. Head of the bridge for Kittery Outlet shopping. Visit Strawbery Banke historic area. You could also take a little drive to Flag Hill Winery and Distillery in Lee NH for a wine tasting. Portsmouth has a nice downtown area plus the opportunity for a short boat trip. The flowers in Prescott Park will still be beautiful. Also, anything along the Maine coast south of Portland will be within two hours of MHT (Manchester NH). From the airport, take Rt 101 east to Rt 95 (north to Maine).

There are van/bus pick up services that take one from TF Green aiport in Providence to Newport. No need to rent a car unless you want to see some of the surrounding sites. There is even a frequent ferry service from Newport into downtown Providence.
