I'm from Long Island and I would like to get away for a few days and everything is SO expensive. I'd like to aim towards New England and not to the Hamptons. Any suggestions on a small town that is resonable?

The more specific you are, the better. What do you want to pay per night and when do you want to go? Can you go during the week? For how long? Do you want a motel kind of place, or ???

yes, i can go during the week. ideally i don't want to spend more than $125. i'd spend 2 nights. a motel would be ok, as long as it's close to food and beach/boardwalk and/or attractions.

There are tons of things to do and many cheap motels in and around the Lake Placid area.

The Cape Anne Motor Inn, Gloucester MA, is well in your budget and right on the beach, but you'd have to drive into town for food and shopping. Its a nice town to walk around in, though.

What about the Harborside Inn on Block Island?

Is downtown Portsmouth NH too far away?

When are your travel dates -- now, or summertime?

Basically I am free to travel any time this summer. I was hoping to avoid overwhelming crowds, so traveling during the week is an option. I was hoping to keep the drive around 3 hours from NYC. Thanks for the info so far.

Jersey shore? I haven't been there for a while so others may be able to give you options.

I second the Jersey shore. Long Beach Island seems to never have crowds.
