Need a Hotel in Davie?!

I will be going to a summer workshop in NOVA Southeastern University in Davie and I would like to see if anybody could recommend a good hotel in that area. The hotel could be in the Davie area and in the Plantation area. My husband will be coming with me and he will be staying in the hotel while I'm in the workshop so I want it to be a good hotel. I was thinkig about the Hampton Inn Plantatio. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. OHHH Are cab fares expensive or should I rent a car? THANKS!!!

By all means rent a car. The daily rate will probably be less than a single cab ride of more than a couple miles.

One thought, however, is the Marriott Couryard at Dania Beach (adjacent to Davie). They call it the Airport and Cruise Port Courtyard, but it's really next to I-95 southwest of the airport. It is right next to a tri-rail station, so it is possible to go to Miami, Palm Beach, Boca, etc. on that. The hotel is quite new and very nice, and they also have a free shuttle to the cruise port.
It's all so adjacent to a huge Outdoor World fishing and sports place.

Don't stay in Dania. That's very far from Nova.

Also, the Outdoorworld referred to is a giant store selling fishing/hiking/camping supplies. It's not an amusement park.

Definitely rent a car. Really no other way to get around.

There are several hotels in the area. You're not far driving to Sawgrass Mills super mall. The drive to South Beach is about 30-40 minutes.

The Hampton Inn Plantation is pretty close and fine. It's also right next to the Broward Mall stat's a pretty good size.

How long are you staying? If you look on a map, Nova is near Highway 595 and University Street.

"Don't stay in Dania. That's very far from Nova."

I guess "far" is a relative term. According to Mapquest, the above mentioned Marriott Courtyard is 12 minutes or 7.64 miles from Nova Southeastern University in Davie.

But in any case the only reason I mentioned that hotel was in case of NOT renting a car and using the adjacent tri-rail. I'm not sure what the husband's plans are during the day when you are in the workshop.

If I somehow suggested that Outdoor World is an amusement park, I apologize.

I live 15 minutes from Nova.

Well, maybe mapquest says it's 12 minutes (7.5 miles). Try to do it in 12 minutes.

I really can't see doing it in 12 minutes at midnight.

Highway 595 is the only major East-West Expressway. During morning and evening rush hours (8-10AM and 4-6:30PM that place is a parking lot.

At those times, even going from Nova to the Hampton inn, which requires crossing the Universit/595(84) intersection could take 10-15 minutes.

I'm trying to picture hotels in the area of Nova. There used to be a Best Western across the street but that was a dump and I think it's gone.

While there is a lot of slow traffic at the intersection mentioned above, the Hampton Inn is in a good location for you.

Right across from the Broward Mall. Several restaurants (chains) on the outside of the mall facing University, a large Barnes & Noble bookstore.

In the evening, after the traffic dies down, you're right near Highway 595.

Going a few minutes west to Flamingo Road you can go the the Sawgrass Mills super mall.

Going East your 20-25 minutes from downtown Ft Lauderdale and Las Olas street.

Going East and then South on I95 you're about 40-45 minutes to South Beach and the clubs and Lincoln Road restaurants.

All of the above times are assuming you're waiting until after rush hour time.

I don't know when you're planning on being at Nova (or for how long) or what the Miami Dolphins mini-camp or practice schedule is.

However, the Dolphins training camp is on the North-West corner of the Nova campus (you can see it when driving by on University) and that time of year the mini-camps are open to the public and free.

If you guys are into golf, there are several golf course a few minutes away from anywhere in the area. Plantation Preserve is on Broward Blvd just east of University and it's a public course. It's only a year since it was redone.

Oh. I forgot to mention.

The Tri-Rail goes North-South and not East-West.

If you somehow get yourself to the closest stop (which I believe is Broward Blvd and I95) you can get to the Miami Airport.

Wherever you get off, you then have to get to your destination.

Don't be without a car!!!!

The Hampton Inn that Myer's recommending gets very good reviews on tripadvisor. The Courtyard in Dania seems to get a lot of train noise so people were not happy. I think the idea of staying near the Broward Mall is a good one, but depending on how long this workshop is, you might want to consider staying further from the school to be in the downtown Las Olas area so your husband can walk to more places, unless he's going to drop you off every day to have the car.

mclaurie,

I think I asked a couple of times how long she expects to be at the workshop.

I assumed her husband would drop her off and pick her up.

While we enjoy the restaurants on Las Olas, I'm not sure there's much to do there during the day.

I think the important thing is to have a car and try to avoid the work-day commuter drive.

The beach is pretty close to Las Olas so that's a plus to some.

mclaurie,

Yes, the water taxi is a nice evening ride. Passes some interesting areas.

I don't think we know enough.

Is she just looking for a hotel?
Activites for her husband during the day?
Activities for both in the evening?

How long is the stay?

I can't vouch for the hotel, since I've never stayed there, but if my wife were attending a conference during the day, I'd probably want to stay at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino nearby...

Hey,

That's not a bad idea. A bit of a drive to Nova but not a congestion route.

The only thing is, when you leave the hotel complex it's a wasteland.

But it's an idea.

Well I was just interested in hotel. But everyone here has come up with pretty good questions and ideas. My workshop is from June 24-June 30. I did consider the Hard Rock Hotel but looking at the map I saw that the Hampton Inn is better located since it does have places to eat at walking distance and it is close to mall. Am I wrong? If we rent a car, my husband would drop me off and pick me up. My workshop ends at 4:30 pm. What activities if any will I be able to do with my husband during the evenings?

Thanks to everyone who is helping me out on this. It is greatly appreciated.

You're correct. Other than a few restaurants in the Hard Rock, the area is a wasteland (dump). The again - casinos.

The area around the Hampton has Broward Mall and some restaurants along the mall on University. Also a large barnes & Noble.

I don't know if you are familiar with the weather that time of year.

You get up in the morning to blue skies. By mid/late morning the clouds are building. Between noon and 2PM you probably will see torrential rain and thunderstorms. Then toward mid/late afternoon the weather clears to a beautiful evening. With humidity.

Because of the afternoon rain, the temperature seldom goes above 92.

I suggest for evenings you go into Ft Lauderdale and wander Las Olas (several restaurants) or go all the way to the beach and try some of the restaurants there.

Take either Broward Blvd all the way past US 1 and then a block to the right for Las Olas and you can continue to the beach. Or a bit more driving but faster, take 595 to I95 and north to Broward and east into Ft Lauderdale.

Also, go down to South Beach and/or Lincoln road for restaurants and some night life.

Rent a car. really no other way to get around.

Brave to Myer for his advise. Definitely can do better than Dania. Will need a car, I agree.

I hope the various comments about Dania which seemed to be directed to me realize that I never recommended actually staying in what you'd think of as Dania. That Courtyard I suggested primarily in the event of no car and being next to the rail station is actually west of I-95 and only a few hundred yards as I recall from the Davie line. It's hardly a recommendation to stay IN Dania.

But I agree that you should get a car, and if you do, then my original recommendation could easily be ignored.

Patrick,

It was not directed at you.

I find that I can usually give better recommendations for places we've visited (probably because I've researched it) rather than where we live.

It's good to see what others have to say and then we either agree or disagree with them.

I would probably add a few hours to visit the Hard Rock and the casino. I find it's usually pretty quiet during the week so you may want to visit on the weekend if that works for you.

I was really referring more to rncheryl's post right above mine "you really can do better than Dania". I wasn't aware of anyone suggesting to stay in Dania. But no problem.

An interesting tid-bit.

Hollywood-Ft Lauderdale International Airport is not in Hollywood nor is it in Ft Lauderdale.

It's in Dania!!!

Actually Dania doesn't exist anymore, does it? I thought it was now all officially called Dania Beach. I remember a couple years ago when all the showrooms in the Design Center of the Americas had to change their addresses to Dania Beach.
