N.C. Outer Banks - dog off-leash at the beach

I have been researching the leash laws for areas of the Outer Banks, and it appears that only Duck and Kitty Hawk permit dogs off leash on the beach. Is this correct?

Yes, as far as towns go. The National Seashore says you have to have them on the leash, but there is so much deserted beach you can go there and let them run around. Friend of mine has three dogs-he took them when we went down on a weekend this past July and we went there and let them run around. Nobody in sight on the beach except a few people way off in the distance. There are not enough park service people to patrol 70 miles of empty beach looking for dogs off the leash. You just have to go somewhere away from the parking areas and campgrounds-easy enough to do.

You are right about Kitty Hawk and Duck. Both towns do require dogs to be well behaved and the owners to be in control of there dogs. That covers about 25% of the dogs and their owners.

We spend a lot of time in Duck and don't unleash our dog unless we can see no one else on the beach (which given its popularity isn't very often). And even then there have been a couple near misses with dumbwits who who open their back doors and let their dogs roam.

Off leash in the Hatteras National Seashore is a better idea, however, please don't let your dogs roam in the dunes which are home to nesting birds and turtles.

I have seen a forest ranger "talking with" a couple whose dog was running free on the national seashore...it was during nesting season.

Depending on the time of year that you go Duck or Kitty Hawk might be OK, but maybe not. If the beaches are crowded, or if your dog is naughty, you might get annoyed people.

What a great link!! We're taking our dogs to the OBX this weekend, so I'm glad I read this! We would only let them loose if there was no one on that beach at all - which on Labor Day weekend is probably just not going to happen....
