Napa, Tahoe & Yosemite drive/fly itinerary
My husband and I are planning a trip next late June or July to Northern California. We would like to visit North Lake Tahoe, Yosemite & Napa or Sonoma Valley (which is better?) for 2 - 3 nights apiece. My questions are: Should we fly into Reno or SF (from chicago) and do a loop--or should we fly into one city and back from the other? Which order would be the best to drive from one to the other? We don't love to drive a lot--so would like to minimize the times and distances. Also, is there any coastal city close to the valleys that would be worth the drive? We have already done the coast South of SF? We love the outdoors--both beautiful scenery and activities--hiking, beaching, boating etc. We will probably limit the trip to 8 - 9 days. Should we cut out one of the destinations or do you think, timewise, all 3 are doable? Any input is much appreciated.

Your three "musts" are far apart so you really can't minimize the driving. Just a fact of life.
Normally open jaw is a great option - but in your case R-T in/out of the same city makes sense. One version: Into SFO > Napa/Sonoma (Sonoma is my fav but that is just my personal choice) > North Tahoe > Yosemite > SFO
If you choose over/near the July 4th holiday you'll need to book rooms far, FAR ahead. And you'l want to book Yosemite (stay in the Valley itself - Yosemite Lodge is best unless you want to splurge on the Ahwahnee) as soon as your dates are firm.
North Tahoe is lovely and you'll be able to get rooms closer to the date (unless right on the 4th)
