Napa or Sanoma for a visit to wine country?

We will be in San Francisco in April and want to do some day trips. For a visit to wine country, would you recomnend Napa or Sanoma? Which wineries are your favorite?

cd, I love Sonoma County and the Alexander Valley/Dry Creek/Russian River Wineries. I have a journal on www.igougo.com you might want to look at. (search: Grasshopper) with winery, restaurant and hotel suggestions.

Have a great time. April is beautiful there. Green with lots of blossoms.

One more great link. Someone posted this before but it's got great interactive maps of the area!

Been to both. Great wineries in each. Sonoma is a bit more laid back but first-timers should probably go to Napa and visit the big ones: Beringer, Mondavi, Sterling (with its aeriel tramway). There are many smaller ones too (e.g. V Sattui). Note that many Napa wineries charge a nominal fee for tasting whereas most do not in Sonoma.

I prefer the Sonoma side and particularly Dry Creek,Alexander Valley and Russian River areas.(like Grasshopper) One can still get a sense in many of the wineries on that side of a working vineyard. The guides folks have suggested for you here will probably point you in the right direction. I recommend you check out places known for zins and in the Russian River area Pinot Noirs. Don't miss some of the tasting rooms as well. While they are not wineries per se you can still taste some of the good wines of the region. I am partial to both Merry Edwards and Sapphire Hill for pinots. Rosenblum has a tasting room in downtown Healdsburg. They have some great Zins!
