Hmm, I wonder where Ackislander is?? He is the authority on the island. Of course, you can see that these places are tiny, but they could still be fine.

When we stayed in places that looked of the vintage of these on the Cape, we found that the damp mildewy "aroma" was a bit of an issue.

These are small (tiny) cottages in someone's back yard in a terrific location. They really are on a lane that has virtually no traffic unless there is construction going on nearby. They are classic beach cottages.

I don't know them specifically, but they are about 4 blocks from my house, so I will go by tomorrow and post my observations.

Socialworker, on the Cape and Islands (and Maine and the Jersey Shore), the smell of mildew is the smell of home! Seriously, I sm on my way home today after almost a month away, and I can't wait to open the door and fill my nose with memories! Besides, in June, you can open all the windows, and the cottages will always have a breeze.
That is a very Old Yankee neighborhood, though Tommy Hilfiger owns a house just down the block. If you like Steps Beach, you couldn't be closer for less than $30,000 per week in season. There are sidewalks all the way to town, and you aren't far from Jetties Beach, either.

Well, I am really glad that I "topped" the thread that had gone down the list w/o a response! I knew that you would be able to be of help if you saw the post, Ackislander! Sounds like they should grab it, pending your final approval.

Re: the houses we rented many years ago on the Cape.... there is regular "seashore" smell and there is throat-closing mildew. Unfortunately the place we rented in Falmouth was the latter. The real problem was sleeping, b/c in spite of being able to open window, the room did not have cross ventilation and the closets in the bedroom were so full of mildew as to be unusable and I believe that the mildew from them was seeping out into the room. Not to mention the spider animal park that was operating behind the bed.

Yucchh! No, we have "seaside closed up smell", no mold or mildew except on some shoes one June!

I have made it as far as Hyannis and am waiting for the ferry. Home tonight!

I went by yesterday for a look. Sorry I didn't get back to you until today, but I had to come to the Atheneum since I have shut down my internet connection until March.

They are indeed on a lane that should see no traffic except other residents, and that only in one direction. Turn left from the house onto the lane, and in about fifty feet you can look right out to the jetties between the larger houses at the top of the cliff. If you are there for the brokerage house fireworks toward the end of June, there will be a spectacular view.

They are indeed small. I would not rent the smaller of the two, which I assume is the one at the back of the lot. It is not only smaller, but it is somewhat hemmed in by a privacy fence that cuts it off from the small back yard. Both places have off street parking for one car, but there is no on street parking in the immediate area if you should have visitors.

You are an easy walk from the Steps, not much farther down the stone hill road from Jetties, and about 2 minutes from Something Natural for breakfast and sandwiches. It is sleeting like crazy here now, so I can't confirm the walking distances.

These are indeed real Old Yankee summer cottages. The pictures of the inside look fine, and while you will be well acquainted with each other after two weeks, I think it would be fun. As you know, it can be foggy and cool that time of year, so cozy is nice. If it should be warm, there will be cross ventilation, since the places are only one room deep.

We are hoping to be there for two weeks starting late June so hopefully fireworks will be on the schedule..Being from NYC, we are used to small spaces.. This is actually a step up since we can hang out at the beach!

If you are around at that time of year, maybe we can meet up for drinks?

If you are a New Yorker it will feel positively capacious. The larger is still too small for a big family or a party house, so it should be quiet!
