The Grand Hotel - Mackinaw Island, MI
The Sorrento, Seattle, WA
Windsor Court-New Orleans
The Santa Barbara Miramar.
Ian Schraeger bought it years ago and as far as I know it is just sitting and rotting. Ridiculous!
Ah, the Windsor Court, where I came out to my parents and made my dad cry...
Raphael - Kansas City

I also love the The Grand Hotel in Mackinaw Is, Mi
There used to be a delightful one in St. Louis called The Majestic, but Omni just purchased it...no longer an independent..
I have stayed in a few in SF, but can't recall the names...
I think The Hotel Bel Air in Los Angeles qualifies.
-Bill
Sea Sprite Motel - Hermosa Beach CA
The Adolphus in Dallas. It is part of the Noble Group but is definitely "Old Style" and is fabulous!!!!
The Glenwood Springs Hotel- Glenwood Springs, Colorado
The St. Paul Hotel-St. Paul, Minnesota

O. Henry Hotel in Greensboro, NC

The Brown Hotel, Louisville, KY
It is now a Camberley hotel, but this is what the ad says: In the heart of Theater Square, The Brown Hotel is one of Louisville's most treasured historic landmarks. Combining genteel Southern charm with all the excitement of downtown Louisville, The Brown is as delightful as it is convenient. Built in 1923 and lovingly preserved, The Brown demonstrates the ornate splendor that has made Louisville famous. Here you will find service that is unparalleled in surroundings that are truly legendary.
It is also the home of the Hot Brown open-face sandwich.
The Hotel del Coronado in California.
the broadmoor hotel in colorado springs.
mrand. have you been in wayne recently? is there still a place called mr. steak just west of the main traffic light? i grew up on their cheesesteaks and would kill for one right now!!
Wow, mms! Forgot about Coronado! Never stayed there, though
...you sure that's still not owned by a chain?
moosleywild--I am not sure if it has been bought or not, but it IS a great place to stay! You need to do it at least once. We always stay there when we are in the area for special family events and it never disappoints.
The St. James Hotel
Red Wing, MN
The Sea Chest at Treasure Island, Fl.
The Essex House in Miami Beach is a little worn but delighted us.
Hello!
My choice for sure is The Spindrift Inn in Monterey, CA!!!!
http://www.spindriftinn.com/
I dont think its a chain hotel...?
Have a great night!
The Brown Palace, Denver
Wow- MRand, the Wayne hotel. I stayed between there (thumbs up) and the Radnor hotel (thumbs down) for several months for work in 1997. I loved having a drink on the porch out front at the Wayne after work.
japw82, I was at the Adolphus in summer of 1998 when the Mary Kay cosmetics convention (the pink cadillac one) was there. What a riot. Lots of big hair, perfume, and cosmetics in the elevators.
The historic rooms at the Grove Park Inn - Asheville, NC
The Del - Coronado
The Charles Orvis Inn at The Equinox - Manchester, VT
The Chathams Bars Inn - Chatham, MA
The Black Point Inn - Prouts Neck, ME
The Colony Hotel - Kennebunkport, ME
The Summer House - Nantucket, MA
The White Elephant - Nantucket, MA
The Wauwinet - Nantucket, MA
Just curious Starsville - Isn't the Del Coronado owned by marriott Properties now?
It is lovely. we there about 10 years ago.
virginia - I haven't been to Wayne in a while and don't know of Mr. Steak, unfortunately. I really like the area, and there are some great restaurants like Teresa' s and Margaret Kuo's within easy walking distance of the Wayne Hotel. Taquet restaurant at the Wayne itself is also very good especially, as you commented emd, if you can sit out on that great porch for drinks and dinner in the spring, summer or early fall.
The Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC, although it is now owned by Marriott.
I didn't actually stay there, but I just had breakfast at the Driskill in Austin, and the lobby and facade looked lovely.
Oh, brandie! You just made me laugh into my cappuccino!
The Mayflower-D.C.
The Pierre-NYC (I think it may be part of a chain, but I'm listing it anyway)
Since 1896, the Breakers, Palm Beach, FL. They've invested $225 million in an ongoing revitalization and expansion of the resort since 1990.
The Driskill, Austin, TX -- FABULOUS!
La Fonda- Santa Fe, New Mexico
The Peabody, Memphis
The Drake, Chicago
The Algonquin, NYC
Sunset Marquis, LA
The Raleigh, SoBe
Any of these owned by a chain? I'm sure yes.
The Breakers - Palm Beach
The Willard - Washington DC
Harbor Court - Baltimore (not sure if a chain, but a great place to stay)
FYI... not all but most "chain" hotels are not owned by chains. A huge majority of these hotels are simply managed by chains.
TTP....I see in your local newspaper that The Fairmont has been sold....I stayed there once, excellent service.Cant believe when it opened a single room was $17!!!!! Like my Grandmother says..."Way Back When"..
The Melrose and The Stoneleigh in Dallas
>>Wow, mms! Forgot about Coronado! Never stayed there, though...you sure that's still not owned by a chain?<<
>>moosleywild--I am not sure if it has been bought or not, but it IS a great place to stay! You need to do it at least once. We always stay there when we are in the area for special family events and it never disappoints.<<
The Hotel Del belongs to KSL Resorts. They used to operate quite a few destination hotels throughout the U.S., among them the Doral in Miami, La Quinta Resort, the Grand Wailea and the Arizona Biltmore. However, they have ceased to operate all of the aforementioned hotels in order to raise sufficient funds to invest into their remaining properties. The latter consist of The Del, Rancho Las Palmas Resort and La Costa Resort.
I should think that neither of these hotels would qualify as a "chain" hotel despite being under the management of the same company.

What fun. I realize I was lucky enough to stay at or dine at many of these. What about the Hay Adams in D.C?
The Pierre in NYC is a Four Seasons hotel.
The Concord Hotel - Catskill Mountains, NY
The Cloister, Sea Island, Georgia
mclaurie,
The Pierre used to be a Four Seasons, but is now managed by Taj Hotels.
No consistency in the business anymore.
The Jefferson, Richmond, VA
The Grove Park Inn, Asheville, NC
The Haywood Park, Asheville, NC
The Sanderling Inn, Duck, NC
Hotel Del Coronado is my favorite. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Homestead (VA) or the Greenbrier (WV). (Greenbrier is too stuffy for my taste, but definitely an old-world hotel.) Woodstock Inn in VT is worth a mention. Sanctuary in Kiawah Island is brand new, but feels like an instant classic.
In Old Town Alexandria, the Morrison House.
Stayed at the Colony at Kennebunkport a few years ago and loved it! Gracious, grand and a beautiful setting. Our stay included the meal plan - breakfast was just so-so but dinner was wonderful.
Depends on how old.
Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.
La Quinta in Palm Springs.
The Peabody in Memphis is cool - do they still have the ducks?

And once again I have to tout the Siena in Chapel Hill, NC, one of the undiscovered hotel gems of the East/South.
A "new" one in that it has under gone a million dollar restoration--
Davenport Hotel in Spokane WA.
I love this list--
