Spent 4 nights at the Mystic Hilton. We were very pleased with the hotel, all recently renovated and looking spiffy. The package included full buffett breakfast each morning and free admission to the Acquarium. The location was excellant, directly across from the Acquarium and Old Mystic Village.
We also explored downtown Mystic and had a very good seafood lunch at the S&P Oyster Company, overlooking the Mystic River and the drawbridge which is raised each hour.
Visited the Mystic Seaport, had lunch at the Seaman's Inn, very atmospheric but very light food.
Had dinner at Go Fish and the Steak Loft, both were good for what they were. Not gourmet but not very expensive either.
Spent a day at the Mohegian Sun and found it to be a very upscale property.
The Hilton offered a free shuttle to Foxwoods but we were unimpressed with the entire experience of the casio, no comparison to Mohegian. Incidentially, the Mystic Hilton is owned by Foxwood, along with several other Mystic hotels.
We took the Amtrak down and had no problem navigating without a car. The Hilton provided free pickup and dropoff at the Amtrak station. We yellow cabbed it to downtown, the seaport and Mohegian. All in all a very pleasant experience, the weather helped, it was high 70's most of the week with no humidity and brilliant sunshine.

How long of a ride was it to Mystic, where did you leave from?
Linda: Took Amtrak from NYC, the ride took about 3 hours. Rode in business class to assure a seat, got newspapers and beverages included.
Should I bother to ask what they serve at the Seaman's Inn?
Oysters on the menu?
Old Salty: The Seaman's Inn is a standard New England seafood restaurant. They serve chowders, fried/baked/broiled seafood, I beleive oysters were on the menu. You can sit outside, or a choice of 2 inside rooms, with the one to the right of the entrance the most atmospheric. The room to the left is a bar/taproom and more of a dark winter decor. The food was good but the portions were small.
I was so happy to see your message posted up here! I am trying to figure out a place to take a group of about 15 [mostly in their 50s and 60s] to a nice, quiant place in New England. I thought about Mystic but now I am convinced.
Just a few questions:
Was the ride up scenic? [We are going in Oct.]
Did you go to the facory outlets? was it worth it?
Did you go whale watching [ what I'm, looking for there!]
The folks I am going with, want a very very nice hotel, great scenery, one or two worthwhile activities [no gambling] and great food.
Michelle: I thing Mystic is a great choice for the Fall season, the entire area is very scenic. The Amtrak ride from Manhattan wasn't particularly scenic, typical suburban landscape for much of the ride. The last half hour the scenery improves as the train rides along the coast through the Groton/New London area. To be honest, we read magazines and newspapers most of the way and barely noticed the scenery.
The Mystic Shopping Outlets are not much to talk about. They are directly across from the Mystic Hilton, I noticed a Bass and Haines outlet, but the most interesting store in the entire strip was Cap Cod Crafters with lots of different types of crafts, which make great souvenirs.
As far as whale watching goes, I wasn't aware of it. Being on the Long Island Sound, it would seem you would have to go a long ways out to sea to see Whales.
I would highly recommend the Hilton if you are looking for a chain hotel with a great location. Amerisuites was another in the area. Marriott has a "Mystic" hotel, but it is really in Groton and would probably require an auto to get back and forth to the attractions. If you are into Bed and Breakfast type hotels in downtown Mystic, you can find details at:

The food was good at the local restaurants, but I wouldn't consider it "great". Of course we were in the tourist areas so I guess if you are looking for the "great" restaurants in the area, the locals can probably better direct you.
