We are dropping our son off for his freshman year at college in Boston next week, driving up from Maryland. The college demands that he show up at his dorm between 10 a.m. and noon. Rather than getting an ungodly-early start that day, we figured it would be nice to spend the night along the way, a couple hours out from Boston. I vaguely remember visiting Mystic Seaport as a kid, about 40 years ago, and the location is about right for our plans.
Unfortunately, the Seaport museum closes at 5:00, and even with an early start we wouldn't have all that much time to see it (at $55 admission for the three of us).
Soooo... with or without a visit to the museum, is the rest of Mystic good for a few hours of walking around in the late afternoon and early evening? Any suggestions of things to see (like a historic neighborhood to walk around in) and places to eat?

We were in Mystic for the weekend and came across Daniel Packer Inn and figured lets give it a shot. We were not disappointed! It has a Sunday afternoon family dinner feel to the place. Definitely gives you that New England ambiance. The waitress was attentive and was great with out table of four. Three of us had the lemon peppered chicken and all three of us still bring it up 2 years later when we discuss great places we have dined out at over the years. The chicken was so soft and juicy with a great sauce smothered all over it. One other person had the duck and loved every minute of inhaling it. We had room for desert and downed some great cakes. Definitely will hit this place up again when in the area! http://www.danielpacker.com

I recently booked a dinner cruise with Voyager Cruises for some clients. They have two vessels, the Mystic and the Argia. We chartered a private sail on the Tall Ship Mystic, but the Schooner Argia also offers a Sunset Cruise from 530-730pm with cheese, crackers, fruit and soft drinks. Check them out at http://www.voyagermystic.com/argia_daysails.htm . Our clients *loved* it and really got a 'taste of New England'...
Do you realize that Mystic is really not on the best route to Boston? Going that way (i.e., the entire length of Connecticut on I-95) will add at least a half hour to your driving time.
Yeah; I know it's not the quickest way. Going north on I-91 at New Haven, then on I-84 and then I-90 would be the shorter route. I was just trying to figure out a cool stop-off. Since we're breaking up the trip, an extra half-hour isn't really a big deal.
Do you have any suggestions about another interesting place to stop for the night, no more than 3 hours out from Boston, that would be along the that uses Interstates 95/91/84/90 route?
I don't have a suggestion for a substitute spot, but the shortest route is NOT going I-91. Rather, the best route is 684 to 84 following the latter al the way to the Mass Pike (I-90).
We love staying in Mystic, and have stayed about six times at The Inn at Mystic.
The views from the rooms are really pretty. Cute town to walk around.
Dine at their restaurant, Flood Tides, it's excellent.

Thanks everyone!
Howard. That does indeed look better... especially on Labor Day weekend!
