Definitely go down to Charleston. It's a pleasant drive from MB through the Francis Marion National Forest. On the way, you can stop by Brookgreen Gardens. Your two-year-old will love the wildlife park. The otters are the cutest!!

Southport NC (across river, sort of, from Wilmington, and closer to Myrter), and perhaps the ferry (might entertain a 2 yr. old) from there over to Bald Head Island, where you can rent a golf cart and putter around through some of the forested part and maybe see an alligator.
then, within your radius:
Wrightsville Beach
Asheboro NC where the NC Zoo is, and it's a very nice one, is about 3 hrs. away -
and even the Raleigh area, but why go to cities if you're there for beaching?
However, you didn't ask, but if you want to entertain a 2-yr. old, wouldn't put him/her in a car for 2-3-4-5 hours. Stay within an hour - no further than Wilmington.

If you're interested in taking the 2-year old to a zoo, the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC is a better choice. Much more compact scale for a 2-year old.
But as mentioned above, is the 5-hour round trip worth it? Not in my book.

oh i guess i should have specified 'why' - while we're out in that 'area' we wanted to check out some places with scenic drives and such so we could 'mix it up' with the beach scene. also, 5 days lying on the beach will likely get boring for us. so wanted to start the trip with the beach, drive away for a day or two and come back to end the trip at the beach again. also, any suggestions for state parks etc.? places other than cities to check out? thanks again, should have been more specific! how far is 'blue ridge mountains' and what is the city they fall in?

Mountains are too far for a day trip. If you really have an itch to see the area, Charleston is a great choice and Wilmington has a nice historic downtown area about an hour in the other direction (though not to be compared with Charleston).

If you want a road trip more than a beach vacation, you could consider flying into Charlotte NC, driving into the Blue Ridge around Asheville, returning to Myrtle Beach for a couple of days, and then going down to Charleston or up to Wilmington before returning to Charlotte for your flight. The changing accommodations get more complicated, but you'll save a lot of driving time to and from Myrtle Beach.
If you are worried that five days at the beach could be boring, you might consider staying at one of the beaches closer Charleston so that you could easily drive into town or visit surrounding sites when you don't want to be at the beach.

I have to admit that for a person coming from the part of the country where "a week at the beach" is THE yearly tradition, the explanation is sort of humorous!! Never leave the beach! Big SMILEY here.
We just returned from our beach trip with all kids and grands, and the only day away from the beach (and that partially) was a big shopping trip to the Hammock Shops.
I agree with Kiawah--one of the beaches south of MB might be more to your liking. Even Surfside, Garden City,Pawley's Island/Litchfield. And Charleston's beaches.
You asked about parks. In Litchfield/Pawley's Island there is Huntington Beach State Park. There are alligators, a nature walk, beach, camping and picknicking areas. It is just south of Murrell's Inlet. There is also Brookgreen Gardens which is just beautiful--and has a little zoo. And right now a butterfly room.
The mountains are a LONG drive from the beach.
