Myrtle Beach Suggestions

My husband and I are looking to head to Myrtle Beach next spring.......we were thinking March 24-30 or maybe the weekend after Easter......not sure when spring break is, though. Anyone know?

I've checked out Marina Inn at Grand Dunes. It got some good reviews, but it is not on the beach (hubby's wishlist, but it's not like we're going to swim in the occean at that time, tough Wisconsin blood or not). I understand there is a resort fee as well, though I don't know how much. I also heard good things about the Best Western. Anything anyone can recommend. There's only like a gazillion places to choose from!

Also, is the airport "in" Myrtle Beach? I hear that North Myrtle Beach is less congested, but we just want a nice place to stay, places to golf, places to eat.....we don't want cheap but can't really afford over $200 a night or anythning, either. Would like to use $ for food and golf!

We did this last year for the first time (just he and I and golf) and went to Palm Springs. Stayed at Embassy Suites La Quinta and had a really nice time. Figured we'd give it another try!

Hi, Cyndi. My husband and I have been living in Myrtle Beach for 14 years.

If you are looking for ocean front accommodations in the area of the Marina Inn, I would suggest the Marriott Grande Dunes:

>...not sure when spring break is...
There are no official dates for Spring Break, since colleges vary with their break times. Usually it is in April, but some colleges break in March.

The Myrtle Beach International Airport is located in the City Myrtle Beach.

As you mentioned, there are many accommodations to choose from. If you are looking for something less expensive you might want to check out the accommodations available at the northern end of Myrtle Beach such as Dayton House, which is a popular choice of the members on my message board:

If you have additional questions, please visit my Myrtle Beach forum:

Or send me an e-mail and I'll try to help you find what you're looking for:

You could go a bit further south to Garden City,Surfide, Litchfield and have a MUCH more attractive stay than in MB or NMB--and on the ocean. MB is a huge congested city, make no mistake about it. Golf would be close, and great places to eat.
Your dates will probably hit some sort of spring break--it isn't just colleges but also public schools that contribute. It isn't a reason to not go--but choose somewhere other than MB.
Take a look at Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort. They often have really good packages for "off season" with golf. It is a beautiful property.

I agree with Gretchen... and IMHO the golf courses in the Pawley's Island area are fabulous.

Hi Cyndi,

We have vacationed in MB many times. I think spring break is usually earlier in March but I could be wrong. In any event, you don't want to be anywhere when it's spring break! LOL

I found this website: http://www.studentcity.com/blog/when...-spring-break/
It looks as if spring break varies by schools. The average seems to be March 3rd or 10th & some of the colleges included are in SC or NC.

I would suggest that you look for a place in either North Myrtle Beach which is a bit more off the beaten path and somewhat quieter. There are many nice hotels located here. My brother has a condo in NMB and we have stayed there so familiar w/ the area. You can get golf packages at the hotels also. You may want to rent a condo if you are staying a week.

I would also suggest you take a look at Litchfield as it is a bit further south of MB. Here is the Litchfield Inn website:

http://www.litchfieldinn.com/

We met a lady on a recent cruise that vacations there all the time and plans golf tournaments there. I also have another friend that went there last year for a week and they loved it there. It has golf, restaurants, etc. You can go to Murrell's Inlet and many nice restaurants there also. Murrell's Inlet is not far from Litchfield.

There is a lot to do in this area. You can drive to Charleston in about an hour and a half. It's a nice day trip and one of my favorite places to visit. You will find much info on Charleston.

You can go back to Myrtle Beach if you want to shop, many outlets and plenty of shopping also.

http://www.myrtlebeachshopping.com/b...t-landing.html
http://www.myrtlebeachshopping.com/market-common.html
http://www.myrtlebeachshopping.com/b...the-beach.html

You can see Broadway type shows here also.

You certainly won't be bored if you visit MB or go further south into Pawley's Island, Murrell's Inlet, etc.

You can fly right into Myrtle Beach, rent a car and head off to your vacation. The airport is small and very easy getting in/out of.

Good luck. Enjoy your stay.

The Litchfield Inn is a nice hotel and it is right on the ocean. They have a pool, a couple of restaurants, and it has been recently renovated. It could be a good choice. It is at the lower end of Litchfield where large private residences begin.
The beach can be busy beginning at that time, but there is plenty of room there. It is NOTHING like MB, but with lots to do, as the other poster said. SO much nicer than MB.

Thanks, guys! I really appreciate the input. Have to decide soon cuz my husband has to pick his vacation at work! I think I'll opt for North Myrtle Beach. Don't want that much excitement, just some golf and quiet times together! As for accommodations, something by the water, like I said, mid price is good.

Embassy Suites north of MB (but not yet in North MB) is close enough to the action to go places but has a quiet beach area.
The Marriott Grand Dunes which was mentioned is also very relaxing.

Rate are low during March. You need to have a room by the ocean.

You will be able to find many nice hotels located in North MB.

http://www.kingstonplantation.com/ac...mbassy-suites/

Check out Kingston Plantation as they offer many different types of lodging, condos, villas, hotels. You should be able to get some decent prices in March.

My husband and his group of golf buddies used to stay at Kingston Plantation every year. It is located on a quiet end of North MB. There are golf courses and restaurants located nearby. Also many shopping centers (Tanager Outlets, Barefoot Landing, etc.). Nice theaters in the area also where you can see live shows.

Definitely find something on the water, it is so worth it sitting on your balcony and looking at the ocean (maybe w/ a glass of wine??).

Have fun. If you want some suggestions for golf courses, I can ask my husband as he has played on so many of them. Some are more difficult than others, don't know what your handicaps are.

cyndi, just to let you know that week is going to be spring break for elementary and secondary schools here in MA. Not to say everyone will head to MB, but people do head down there from here. A lot of families head to Disney World also. I do not know if any of the other New England states take that same week. Ours is always the week of the Boston Marathon which I think is April 16, 2012.

Have fun!

If you are talking about NOT wanting excitement, go further SOUTH.
That is a week after Easter and you won't run into many local spring breaks at all. BUT it does begin prime beach visiting time for us Carolinians. Still, maybe, 'shoulder' season.

Hi Gretchen,

What do you consider further south? We are looking for a winter snowbird getaway for a month in Jan. I have been researching where we can go. We love MB but not sure about the temps in Jan. Any suggestions further south for us? We are not big fans of FL so maybe we should head to the Caribbean! We have considered the Gulf Coast of FL but not familiar w/ that area. Any suggestions much appreciated.

I am talking 20 miles south of MB. It is so much quieter and nicer. Golf is nearby. Beacehes are uncrowded . SO many good restaurants that are easy to get to. Shopping. Golf nearby, etc etc etc. MB is just gridlock.

Another idea: Consider renting a condo. There are a zillion of them in Myrtle, although some of the reasonably priced ones are on golf courses, not oceanfront. Some include golf packages.

Like a lot places, Myrtle overbuilt several years ago. A lot of people bought condos specifically to rent them out, but the market hasn't been great for that. Thus, you could find some nice places in your budget. Of course, it's not the same as a hotel, but that's a choice you can make.

Thanks so much for everyone's input. We know how crowded MB has gotten over the years. If we decide to do MB, then we would look further south. I have found some nice rentals in Charleston area. I love Charleston for it's charm and being so different from MB. I am also looking at Gulf Coast area, from Perdido/Orange Beach areas in Alabama to further south in Florida (Destin, etc.).

So it's going to take me a while to figure it out. We don't mind renting a condo vs a hotel. Condos are quieter in that the same people may come back and rent them winter after winter. I am not opposed to hotels either. We are just looking for a winter getaway from the snow and cold!

It still won't be warm enough to swim in Charleston in January, at least not for my Southern blood. Sea Cabins at Isle of Palms has some nice units and is oceanfront. I think they rent through Island Realty.

Patrish:
Any suggestions?
February for the two of us is a five day Winter beach fix and anniversary celebration. We live in E TN and the SC coast from Myrtle Beach to Charleston is our closest salt water. Past visits have been to N Myrtle Beach.
Since last beach fix, we've adopted Riley, an elderly Schnauzer. Avista and Towers, previous NMB stays, don't accept pets.
We'd prefer a beachfront house or first floor condo where Riley can go Outies without having to deal with an elevator or people. Riley's poot is promptly gathered and bagged for proper disposal.
We generally eat out for lunch and then pack in dinner from Boulineau's, so leaving Riley behind is not an issue.

Sue gave you good info on her post on your other thread. You can probably google for dog friendly hotels also.
You could call Litchfield beach and Golf Resort and ask their policy.
