Myrtle Beach, SC ... Where to drive to??

My boyfriend and I were looking for a "cheap" getaway, and flights to Myrtle Beach were too hard to pass up... Now that I'm reading up on the area, it sounds like there's a reason for that!

We are beach lovers, so I think it will all work out - but we're also looking to experience some of the history around the area. We were thinking about renting a car for a few days (we're staying a total of 5 nights in a condo in Myrtle Beach) - and would love to take a day long road trip.

Does anyone have any suggestions of places to go - that includes a nice drive as well as an interesting final stop? We'd like to stay off the freeway, and hopefully drive through small towns and things of the sort.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Amanda

You could do a day trip to Charleston, SC. You could go through Georgetown on the way and explore a little, and then head down to Charleston for the afternoon. Lots of history there, plantation tours, interesting downtown, etc. It's only about 2 hours from Myrtle Beach.

Right down the road through Georgetown and to Charleston. Near Georgetown, there are some interesting ghost tours by boat that talk about plantations of the past, etc.

There's lots to do. Where are you coming from to get a cheap flight to MB--I need those for family!!
Anyway the above suggestions are great. There is also Brookgreen Gardens just south of MB, VERY worth a tour. The food in Murrell's Inlet is the best on the coast.
Georgetown could be done in a morning on another day from MB--just go straight on to Charleston and have a long day of it would be my suggestion.
Do not be tempted over the speed limit south of Georgetown---it's a big deserted 4 lane highway and very well patrolled!!

Thanks everyone! We're from the UP of Michigan - and there is no such thing as a cheap flight from anywhere close to us, so we're flying out of Chicago (about an 8 hour drive).

Georgetown sounds perfect and I've always wanted to visit Charleston.

Thanks so much for the suggestions!

And please don't overlook Brookgreen Gardens and the home of the Huntingtons across the road from it. The house is worth a tour for interest--it hasn't been fully restored, nor furnished, but the architecture (Spanish Moorish) is interesting, bordering on head shaking!! It is a huge square, right on the beach, and has no hallways--you go from room to room!! It has the studio where anna Huntington did her huge metal sculptures that are in the gardens acroos the road.

Oh, while you are in Georgetown (a charming little town--dating from Revolutionary War time) go to the seafood market there for fresh off the boat fish and shrimp, if you will have cooking in your condo.
And the Pawley's Island beachfront is also an historic district, and has some lovely beach access that will be a lot less crowded than MB.

"beach people"

Is that lazing around on sun loungers or walks on wild and beautiful beaches.

If it is the latter, then on the East coast it does get much better than Bulls Island, just south of Georgetown. You have to get the ferry

http://www.bullsislandferry.com/

There lots of wildlife and a feeling that you are the only human on earth.

I'll second Gretchen's suggestions : we like Georgetown and MI is great for food. Do try and make it down the Charelston which currently has to be the greatest small city in the US.

There is also Southport and Wilmington to the NE of MB. Which side of MB you are staying on, may dictate which direction to go for day trips. I've only driven through MB from end to end twice, once was enough, it is a very, very long stretch.
