Myrtle Beach or Outer Banks (OBX) with 4 and 6 yr old
Has anyone been to both Myrtle Beach (Sourth Carolina) and Outer Banks (North Carolina)? Which area is better for small children? We would like to spend some time at the beach and also spend time do other activities. Any recommendations?
Also, when is a good time in the summer to visit? We would like to go when the water is not too cold. Lodging recommendations would also be good.

You may want to ask the Florida question in the Florida forum.
Myrtle Beach is big, full of high rises and has many family activities and shops. It's huge. The Outer Banks is more spread out, no high rises, and more beach cottages. Both can get crowded in summer.
It's been a long time since I rented a place at either, since I have friends with houses at each, so I can't recommend lodging.

Oak Island, NC is one of my favorite places. I think this would be similar to the Outer Banks experience (from what I've read, but haven't visited). Oak Island is less than 2 hrs up the highway from Myrtle Beach, it's mainly residential and vacation condos and you will not find the hustle and bustle of Myrtle Beach. I hope to take my family there at the end of July if things work out. This would be our 4th trip there. We rent a house usually and go through Margaretrudd.com. I'd go to OI than MB any day (or even the Outer Banks).
However, all the big resorts, pools, water slides, action is in Myrtle Beach. If your children like that kind of activity, then MB might be better. Plus it has a water park in the area, tons of putt-putt golf, a grand strand of sorts (Ripley's Believe it or Not, fun houses, etc.). A Medieval Nights place (my kids loved that).
If I did MB--I'd check out renting a condo--usually a little cheaper than a hotel (if you are staying a full 7 days). VRBO is a place I tend to visit, but haven't used yet.
Good luck!

Outer Banks is quieter with fewer non-beach activities. Myrtle Beach is much more commercial and has lots of non-beach diversions such as golf, mini-golf, shopping, water parks, amusement parks, etc. If you want to spend all day at the beach, then go to the OB, they are much prettier and less crowded IMHO. If you only want to spend a couple of hours a day on the beach and need other activities, go to MB.
