Hubby and I are taking the grandkids (both 9) to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and environs the last week of June. We will have a week. We want to be as flexible as possible and are wondering if securing a hotel/motel on the fly would be easy. If we make reservations, we would be locked in.
Any opinions from you experts?
Thanks in advance,

Shop on Expedia or Hotels dot com and get a reservation that can be canceled with 24 hours notice.
The cheapest you will find is the Best Western in Custer at about $95/night. If you wait you may be paying much more than $100/night after all the cheaper rooms are booked.
I say going anywhere leading up to 4th of July is very risky. Secondly, at any national park, preplanning is really by far the best choice. You could wind up spending a few hours just trying to find somewhere(if any is even available).
Custer State Park would be my pick, but it isn't inexpensive.
I've been on trips in the US and Europe without reservations. Mt. Rushmore is not the place to go without a reservation in the summer. It's too popular, and it doesn't have a lot of accomodations nearby. You could spend significant time finding a place and end up far from where you'd like to be. Add children into the mix, and it could be a miserable experience. As posted above, book somewhere cheap with a cancellation option.
Thank you . . . guess I'll begin the great hotel search! Suggestions appreciated, $150 and under.
