moving to Syracuse

Hooray, I've managed to ask a very important question, which some people managed to twist all around and now I can no longer keep the thread going as there is not an option to post a reply.

I just wanted to thank everyone again, for your help, with the exception of one, dare I say, "stupid" person. We still have not made a decision but think the next step is to definitely make a visit there first. The reason I would move to Albany in a heartbeat is because I spend a lot of time there and am comfortable in that area. My issue with Syracuse is because I don't know much about it. Hence, the reason for posting my initial question "Please--highlight the reasons I would WANT to move to Syracuse". This had absolutely nothing to do with should I move with my boyfriend. To me that is not a question and I resent Stephanie's remarks. Stephanie--you know nothing about my situation. I do have plenty of common sense and no exactly what I'm doing. It's not a question of will we or won't we get married. We will be together for the rest of our lives and we both know that. There was no reason for you to post your views on relationships here as this isn't the place for that...Thanks Elaine and everyone else for backing me up. I'll keep you posted on what we decide.

Hi

I read part of your original post and I think my Mom had a good saying for your dilemma.

"Life is an adventure, if you don't try something new you'll never know what it could have been."

Good luck

Let's keep this all in perspective.

You are not contemplating moving to Hartford Conn. (yuck...sorry) or someplace very far from home.

Perhaps, for you, the best thing about Syracuse is that it is only 3 hours or so from "Placid" as we Upstaters call it. Syracuse is a gateway to the Adirondacks after all and you can get to know the lovely "southern Adirondacks" very quickly and easily from Syracuse.

I live in the Albany NY area and often wish that I was closer to the wonderful and beautiful Finger Lakes wine country.

Screw up some courage and go for it.

Lake Placid isn't going anywhere and you can drive up after work on friday for a lovely weekend with the family if you get homesick...try that from Hartford (sorry to pick on you Hartford).

Hi ethel
glad you didn't let the turkey get you down.

In addition to being born and bred in Syracuse, I lived in Albany for 3 years after that before moving to NYC.

Albany is the state capital and so has that buzz going for it, though the immediate small former-factory towns around it are going through hard times. Albany is wonderful in the summer: there's Saratoga Performing Arts Center, many other arts venues, Saratoga for racing, and the wonderful Berkshire towns in nearby Massachusetts are an hour or two away. Just south of Albany (within an hour) are very hot and newly-trendy towns such as Hudson.

Albany gets less snow than Syracuse, none of that 'lake effect' extra, but in my memory it's equally cold, though I can't quote temp averages (go to www.wunderground.com for that)
Albany has closer driving access to Boston, Montreal, and NYC, though Syracuse is only a short plane ride away from those places. Syracuse has easy driving access as mentioned, to the Finger Lakes, the Thousand Island area, Pennsylvania, points west.

ALL cities have their pros and cons as you know, I hope whatever your choice is, you have a new great adventure.
Both of these cities will be more urban and grittier, I imagine, than Lake Placid.

Coming to this thread late...Syracuase isn't my cup of tea, but my sister-and-brother-in-law live there and they seem to like it. They live in Camillus, which is in the northern part of city (or is it outside the town)? They are outdoorsy folk and they own kayaks; their location seems to be a good jump-off point for going kayaking and hiking, and they go running or biking every day.

I can say from experience that the Finger Lakes area is gorgeous and a fun place to visit. The wineries are a lot of fun.

Anyway, good luck with your decision!

Elaine, funny you mention Hudson. I think it's a dirt hole. My bf grew up there and his mother still lives there. As a matter of fact, we'll be spending this weekend there. Dirt hole may be too strong, but there are definitely some areas not to find yourself alone in. I couldn't see myself living there but in surrounding areas. The rest of his family live in surrounding areas, like Castelton, East Greenbush, Kingston, so by living in/around Albany we would be closer to them and still close to my family...Why do you think the first thread got locked but not pulled?

Peterboy--I know Placid isn't going anywhere, but certain older members of my family may be. Actually, you do make some good points, all of which I'm adding to my list of considerations. Let me ask you something though, if you had to move and had to choose only between Placid or Syracuse area, which would you choose? Put aside cost of living, etc. just wondering what you're preference would be...Oh, and I got stranded in Hartford in January coming home from Tampa--from what I experienced I think I agree with you.

Sunny16--we do a lot of outdoor activities so it's good to know that those would be within reach...I'm hearing a lot about the wineries. That may be a plus because if I move and hate it, I might need a lot of that wine.

Hi ethel,
It's true about there being a lot of outdoor activities here. In fact I've always felt you have to be an outdoor person to love this area. There are a lot of parks and trails. Just curious- what are your interests? Do you like to ride bikes? horses?
My husband and I just spent this past weekend riding our motorcyles all around the city syracuse. We went through all the suburbs to the west, south and east of Syracuse. Ofcourse we stopped at the Dinosaur Barbeque for dinner. (This restaurant was mentioned to you in your earlier post). I was thinking about you a lot. It is very beautiful here. I was thinking about some of the places I thought you would like as we were riding through. There were many. Let me know if you come down for that visit. Maybe I can help you find a nice route to drive through.

Annikany,
That's so nice that you were thinking of me!! I've never been in to riding horses, but I love walking, biking, being on the lake, and woodsy areas. All of this I have right at my fingertips so you can imagine my hesitation in moving away. I have kayaked and enjoyed it immensely but it's not something I've been able to do regularly. Although, if we decided to move maybe it's something I could take up. An important part for me would be an area with great walking trails. When I take a break from the gym I really enjoy walking outdoors. In Placid, you may be familiar with Mirror Lake. From my apt., all the way around it's slightly over 3 miles and it's great exercise. As a matter of fact, we got up early on Sat. morning for our walk and I remember thinking how much I would miss being able to do that...We're definitely going to try to make a visit but I don't know how soon we can. By the way, the company he would be working for is called Sensis? Have you heard or know anything about them? They are in Dewitt so that would probably be our first spot for looking at places to live. How is that area?

Good for you!!
Lucky for the rest of us, that Stooopid person does not post that often. Although it seems whenever she does, it is not pleasant..
Oh well, as one of those who made a huge change when I moved from LA to NYC, I can only say that it worked , the love affair goes on and I expect the same for you

Hi ethel,
I have not heard of Sensis but Dewitt is very nice! It is not a northern suburb so it doesn't get all the lake effect snow. It is close to Syr for commuting and very close to beautiful Fayetteville, Cazenovia, Skaneateles. It's a nice area! There are many places to walk in this area. There are many places to be on the water here and kayaking is my all time favorite summer activity. I go right outside my yard and I have 3 rivers to chose from. You know I'm starting to think you may like it here very much. You know what else Dewitt has- a wegmans! Best grocery store ever! I'll keep watching this post ethel. Did bf apply yet? I'll write more later. I have to go for now.

Boy Ethel you're tough!

If you made me choose, believe it or not, I'd have to pick Syracuse over Placid to live.

If, however, I were forced to choose which I'd rather visit I'd easily go with Placid.

I guess the reason I'd say this is because I love to travel and explore and it is easier to fly and drive to destinations from a larger town like Syracuse than from Placid because you have to drive for 3 hours from Placid just to start traveling ;>)

Make no mistake, I think Placid and the Adirondacks are one of the most special places on the planet (did you know that the Adirondack Park represents 75% of the wilderness left east of the Mississippi?) isn't by any stretch of the imagination the only place I want to go to or be.

I know that you're used to it but winter is just too long and cold "up there" in Placid. Summer is short enough down here in the "flatlands" of Upstate but you have a full month (or more) less of it that we do here in the Albany (or Syracuse) area. You might be on of very few people who could appreciate the "gentle climate" of Syracuse since you'll be comparing it to Placid.

I mean really, isn't -30°F a little extreme?

Scarlett--I looked at some of their previous posts and noticed the same thing. Therefore, I didn't take it personally. I just don't understand why some people have to be like that. It just doesn't make sense but whatever.

Annikany--I think you may have mentioned Wegmans before Actually, I've been to a few as I used to visit Oswego and Brockport during the college days. From what I remember they were quite nice. Our choices here are Price Chopper and Tops. Of course, there's Hannaford too but the closest is 50 miles away...So between Wegmans, wine and bbq I guess there's not really much else I could ask for

Peterboy--I totally see your point about it being easier to access travel destinations. Before I read your response I was actually looking at the Syracuse airport and getting some flight prices on flying Jet Blue from there to some of the destinations I love. With gas being as expensive as it is, it's probably cheaper to fly to Burlington from Syr. then to drive from LP (especially if taking the ferry)...I appreciate your thoughts and can understand your choice...Weather certainly wouldn't be an issue for me. It really can't get much worse in the winter than what I'm used to "up here". Not to mention you make a valid point in that the summer months here are about 1 month shorter. How true. We're just starting to see 70+ degree weather. Haven't even had to put in the air conditioners yet.

Well, I just wanted to let anyone know who may have been following this that right now it looks like we are not going to move to Syracuse. No, I didn't talk him out of it. I told him that if he wanted the job than I would go with him. But, on his own, he decided that he feels pretty similar to the way I feel and that at this point in our lives we wouldn't be happy living there. We just like it in the mountains too much.

I want to thank everyone who took the time out to help me with this decision. I can't even tell you how helpful you all were (well, all but one If we had decided to move your advice, info, and opinions would have made it easier...Who knows though, I'll let you know if things change.

Ethel,
In this morning edition of The Post Standard there is a wonderful article on the company Sensis. Sounds like a great company with a vision for the future. Also seems like they know how to treat employees. The article includes beautiful pictures of the exercise room, main lobby and cafeteria. I think I'll apply for a job there .
Are you still considering a move to Syracuse? The article shows location in Dewitt. It's close to Green Lakes State Park. Great place for walking. This is one of the most beautiful colored lakes I've ever seen! Turquiose green. People use this park to walk on a daily basis. If I lived just a little closer I would love to walk here daily. If you visit Syracuse make sure you stop a Green Lakes State Park so you can see this beautiful resource that would be available to you.
How about an update ethel? Did BF apply? Did you visit Syracuse?

Hi Annika,
I'm sorry to say that we decided to stay here in Lake Placid (I'm sure none of you are surprised). We had some long discussions and the more we thought about it the more we realized how much we really love where we are and really want to buy a house here (if the prices ever become reasonable). I really appreciate you remembering me, though. Who knows, maybe we'll change our minds and it's great to know that the company really does look as good on paper as it sounded.
