Several sites about the city you might check out www.huntsville.org, www.huntsville.al.us/, www.huntsville.about.com/.
For the school systems:
www.hsv.k12.al.us/about.php
www.uah.edu/ ( University of AL in Hsv college)
www.aamu.edu/ (Ala A&M college) and www.oakwood.edu/ (Oakwood College)
There are three school systems in Madison Co, where Huntsville is located. The county school system, Huntsville city school system and Madison City school system. Madison, a "bedroom community" of Huntsville is 12 miles west on I565. Huntsville is opening several new schools this year. Madison is opening at least one.
Most of the growth is along US72W (University DR) between Huntsville and Madison.
The main N-S corridor, Memorial Parkway is having construction of overpasses done on both ends currently. A bridge over the Tenn. River south of town is being built to replace older narrow bridge. The downtown area, around the von Braun Center (Civic Center) is being completely redone. An Embassy Suites hotel and new river walk are being added.

Waaaiiittt for meeeee! Sorry OSB, didn't mean to let you down! Here I am, loaded with infoa bout Huntsville!

PTAngel: I loooove Huntsville. I have lived several places and this is by far my favorite. Where are you moving from?

Schools: are awesome. Try to live in SE Huntsville or Hampton Cove for the "elite" schools. Grissom and Huntsville High are the best districts. Jones Valley Elem, Blossomwood, and Hampton Cove are the best elementary schools. You really can't go wrong with any of those. If you are considering private options, Randolph is the place to go. However, one of the best thigns about Huntsville is that the public schools are strong.

Neighborhoods: Downtown, Jones Valley, Hampton Cove, and Blossomwood are the most desirable places to live. Blossomwood and Downtown you will find older historic homes that will likely need updating or renovating. Jones Valley homes are a little Brady-bunch-ish on the outside, but can be extremely desirable due to schools and location, and can be very ncie inside. Hampton Cove homes are newer and very beautiful. Expensive, but more house for your money. If you'd like more info on really high end homes, I can offer you that too. A growing area is South Huntsville, in the 35803 zip code. You can get a very nice house for little $$ there. Not as convenient, though. A flat lot in Huntsville will gain you automatic resale value. I live next door to one of the best agents in town if you need done. She really is fabulous.

Huntsville is known for the medical industry and the space industry and the Arsenal. These are the top 3 social groups. It is a small-ish city with big-city culture. The Art Museum, symphony, and theatre league are all very, very impressive, especially for a town this size.

Huntsville is Alabama's best kept secret, the crown jewel of the state. You will find that most people are not from here, so it is a very very very easy place to be a newcomer.

You are welcome to email me for more info. [email protected] I am happy to meet you and take you to lunch sometime. I'd love to know what ages your children are and what is bringing you to Huntsville.

TTT for OSB and her friend PTAngel. So sorry I missed this post originally. I hope my info isn't too late to be helpful. I rarely check in to Fodors on weekends, so I missed it both times it originally appeared.

bamakelly: Well....FINALLY a friendly neighbor!! Thanks to both you AND Photodog ( who I have to say was very prompt in his reponse and, I think, provided some very helpful websites for my friend! )But surely there are MORE than TWO fodorites in Huntsville, or have visited and have something to add??

Kelly,I really appreciate your southern hospitality and will make sure PTAngel knows to keep checking the site for your and hopefully others future responses! You were most generous! Thank you! Belle

Belle, I am not sure if there are other Huntsvillian Fodorites. I know there have been a *few* other questions about the city ehre and there, but with few responses. I'm topping this so maybe someone else will see it and chime in for you. I know it would be nice for your friend to have several different perspectives.

I lived in Huntsville about 12 years ago and still visit friends there. I agree that southeast Huntsville is the best area to live in. My friends just moved to the Jones Valley area and really like it. Apparently, there was a big housing boom 30+ years ago because I agree a lot of the Jones Valley neighborhoods have "Brady Bunch" looking houses.

BamaKelly is right about most people not being from Huntsville. The Arsenal and NASA bring in people from everywhere. My southern accent stands out when I visit because no one else has a southern draw.

Thank you photodog and bamakelly for the great info. Sorry it has taken so long to get back online, we have been out of town. I'm glad to hear that Huntsville has so much to offer. It will be refreshing to have so many options. Our youngest is 12 and will be in 7th grade and the older 2 are out on their own at college.
Thanks again for hooking me up Oldsouthernbelle.....a true old southern friend, that will be truly missed

PTAngel, do write back if you have any other questions. I am not on Fodor's much lately because I just returned from vacation and probably won't be on one again for awhile. You are welcome to email me at the address I gave above though.
