Moving to Chicago - need suggestions!
We'll be moving to Chicago in the summer and I would love some suggestions for the following: We have 2 kids (1 and 4), and would love to keep them in the public school systems. I will be working in Evanston, but am a bit worried about the school system there... however, we have narrowed it down to living/school in Evanston or Glenview. Any thoughts about:
1. schools/daycare
2. where to live (we love the "neighborhood" feel we have now... kids out on the streets, etc.
3. somewhere near some coffee shops, etc.

Evanston schools vary from district to district. Look at the north side around Central Avenue - it seems to be what you want.
Glenview has a nice downtown, but not many homes are within walking distance. And the east side of Glenview is the most expensive. They have very good schools all around.
I would also suggest looking in Wilmette and Lincolnwood. What is your price range? Be sure to figure in property taxes and heating costs, especially for an older home.

Hi kssh - I grew up in Evanston, in the neighborhood north of Central Street. It's a wonderful neighborhood, very diverse housing stock, and lots of young families. The shops and restaurants on the Central Street business district are a really easy walk. I can't say enough good things about it!

Welcome to Chicago! I grew up in Glenview and still live in the area. It is a wonderful town. Very good schools. The "downtown" section of Glenview has older homes and then newly renovated or teardown/new construction homes. Prices for homes will vary widely in the downtown section. Older homes from about $500,000 to new homes 1 million plus. There is a new section to Glenview called The Glen. It is all new construction. New homes, townhomes, restaurants, park district facilities, etc. I beleive most of the single family homes in the Glen are $900,000 plus. Evanston is also a wonderful town. Good luck.

You might want to consider Wilmette.It is right next to Evanston and has good schools. Definately look in the Central Street area in Evanston. Very cute part of town.I think that Glenview is hard to get to from Evanston...There is not a quick way to get there. I'd stay in Evanston or Wilmette to reduce drive time to work!

I agree with other posters, that the northern part of Evanston and Wilmette are great. If you are "upper-bracket", consider Glencoe and Winnetka as well. Further north, Highland Park is a nice family neighborhood. I like the Ravinia neighborhood as those homes aren't so outrageously expensive.
The suggestion for Lincolnshire was a good one. Also consider Deerfield and Northbrook -- excellent public schools and not quite as expensive as being near the lake.
