We will be moving to Birmingham, AL in the near future and are looking for information regarding towns nearby that would be safe for family living. We are looking for an excellent school system outside the big city environment. We also enjoy outdoor activities. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is a travel forum, whereas City-Data is more centered around relocation.
The thing you have to be really careful about in that area is that many beautiful neighborhoods and houses are in the city limits, and the city is essentially bankrupt as a result of unwise and unsupervised financial practices. This will create long term problems that you will do well to avoid.
Ask lots of questions, then ask some more.
Sorry for the delay in responding to your suggestion. We appreciate your suggestion re living within the city limits, and that was not our intent. We have thought about Hoover, Trussville, Vestavia Hills, and Clay. Any comments on those areas (or others) would be appreciated. Our place of employment will be near the Birmingham airport.
