For those that know the area- we have a 10 and 12 year old and trying to decide between Mountain Village or staying at the River Club at Telluride. We like the idea of the ambience of the Telluride but is it much convenient for skiing to stay there?

I agree that being in Telluride is more interesting than Mountain Village and Telluride has many more shops, eating options etc . That said, it is pretty easy just to take the gondola from MV into Telluride when you want to go to town, so if you like the accommodations better in MV, that would work.

I assume this is for winter??

Sorry, I missed the last part of your post. To ski, from town, simply take the gondola up and you are all set. Very easy and quite doable, DH does it all the time.

Lucky you to get to visit Telluride. When we visit, we always stay in Mountain Village (our kids are now 15 and 12 and we've been going for about 5 years). If you're skiing, Mountain Village is surrounded by green and blue runs, whereas Telluride is mostly blue and black. We're not expert skiers since we only get out there once a year, so we enjoy having the easier runs right out the back door. We take the gondola into Telluride for dining and shopping. Either will be great.

We liked staying "up on the hill" a lot better than in town because of the views and the open spaces (we had a condo with a picture window looking to the west towards the river valley ... wow, great view). You can use the gondola to go back and forth so it doesn't matter too much I guess. Parking is more of a hassle up top if you have a car.

Just a warning, the extra elevation (roughly 1,000 ft) is enough to cause mild altitude sickness in me the first night or two (everyone has a different threshold altitude and 9,500 ft w/o acclimation appears to be mine) unless I spend a night at around 5,000 - 8,000 ft first, but we live at a low elevation (1,100 ft). By "mild" I mean headaches, fatigue and trouble sleeping.
