Has anyone taken a group tour into these places? We're looking at one that begins in Rapid City, SD, and ends up in Salt Lake City. Except when we'd stay in Yellowstone Park, we'd be in fine hotels, so all this is okay. Will there be a lot of time on the tour bus when we wouldn't have much to see?

I did see the Tetons and Yellowstone via a tour described on the above thread, but this one fortunately got us out hiking a good bit and was a "roughing it" trip to a fair extent. That may not be what you're looking for.
I'd guess that you'll spend a good bit of time on the bus from Rapid City to the two parks and then again from the parks to Salt Lake City with a minimal amount of interesting things to see. No idea how long you'd be in the parks and what the itinerary would be -- I'd ask them in detail if it were me.
Note also that several people on the thread referenced above think it's wiser to do such trips on your own rather than via a group tour. Am thinking you need to have a good idea going in what you expect here and whether this or any tour will provide what you're looking for.
Are you seniors and just don't want to or can't drive? It just seems to me that Yellowstone has so many opportunities for just stopping the car to see wildlife that "a tour", might really effect the quality of the experience. I haven't taken a tour like this, so I am not the one to give an opinion, but that would be a concern.
We have friends who went on a bus tour from Florida to these places in the West that we want to visit, but a bus with a tour group from Florida and back is not our cup of tea. Love to drive & I have driven across the country a number of times, once on my own. We've been to 49 states by car, Alaska and Hawaii by plane. We have children working for the airlines, so we're taking advantage of that now. We're sociable--enjoy meeting people from other states and countries--a new aspect of travel for us. I'll check your recommended thread, bachsunch
